Just started my Christmas break. Won’t open the office back up until January. I’m admittedly a few “liquid of the gods” in for the day.
This may not be popular...but as much as I love sports, I care about UF as a school even more. The changes that have occurred as a result of NIL and the, wide open, transfer portal have caused my interest in college football to wane. As far as I am concerned this semi-pro league the NCAA is talking about can't come soon enough. When it does, "schools" that are more about being football factories, like UGA, Bama and others can go that way. I personally believe that when that happens, we will see their TV rankings go the way of the USFL and XFL and we will see that real college football fans will rally to watch the remaining teams that stay loyal to the student athlete concept. I only hope that when that happens and the minor league teams try to rejoin, they are told that they will have to wait until their last high contract players have either used up their eligibility or left the team.
I appreciate that belief and don’t take this the wrong way, but that is why UF won’t compete in this new landscape. I’m sure I’ll get tons of bacon and come on mans. It’s just an opinion, mine usually sucks.
Maybe canning our DL coach before signing day wasn't the smartest thing to do in retrospect. Or maybe we just can't compete wrt $$$$.
I wish there was one thread for twitter announcements, another for twitter rumors and a third for everyone to just talk about stuff and not post twitter updates!
I agree with you and like I said, if the new landscape is the semi-pro league, I would pass on that and I like to think that many serious universities would too. Then we would see which product attracts more viewers. I know I wasn't the only one flipping past the XFL games looking for something else to watch.
Only some of the DL recruits. We have signed a JUCO DE, a transfer DT, and a high school DT. Arguably the JUCO and transfer will have a more immediate impact on the field. Plus, the class doesn’t close for another month and a half, so if we really need more, I’m sure our staff will find some. Auburn is DESPERATE and has been since the arrival of Saban at Bama. With their new coach, pay for signing bonuses is likely green-lighted. FSU has had a 5* stolen 2 out of the last three years, as have several major programs. The fact that they recognized UF was an excellent judge of DL talent makes me feel great about the ones coming in today. Just my $.02, but I don’t get emotional about kids that haven’t played for us yet.
I respectfully disagree. I don’t think there are enough viewers that would share your disdain enough to turn off the tv. The teams that opt out of a new format will lose status. You can be an elite academic school and have elite athletics. We have proven that for well over 25 years. A new system where the athletic department pays the bills and there is regulated structure, I believe gives UF an advantage over a lot of our SEC brethren.
