I guess that’s why you see it happening all over the place, huh? Is Lagway or any other plus one type athlete jumping on a PWO offer anywhere? No, they aren’t, because there’s a big difference between being a scholarship athlete and a walk on.

Nobody is setting up a program to handle this because it’s not a worthwhile venture. The top kids are going somewhere they get a scholarship. The type of kids you’d lure with this type of program are not worth setting it up for in the first place. Sure you get a Doering or McGriff once every twenty years or more, but you don’t install a very expensive and time consuming system to lure these types of players. Those guys both wanted to be Gators and were coming here whether you paid them or not.

How much Lagway is getting is irrelevant. He will be on scholarship.

Why? Are twitter screenshots super important? You could just visit the actual twitter website if you’re worried about missing something. This thread has tons of conversations inside of it that are not twitter updates. I don’t see the problem in discussing this here. It’s a topic that comes up all the time and is directly related to the twitter content that is posted here.

@paidinfull Napier has a plan for 50 walk-ons. How are they being treated now and what are we selling to get them here? Surely, there’s a current system in place. And if a school like BYU can pay tuition for all their walk-ons with NIL money, why can’t we?

I mean, that’s not even really a realistic number, unless he’s planning to have way less than 85 scholarship athletes. You have to cut the roster down to 105 before the first game or first day of class, whichever comes first. You can carry more than that at certain times, but I’m not 100% sure when you can add the players back and how that all works. You couldn’t really carry 50 of these paid walk on football players all year. They wouldn’t even be allowed to be with the team for portions of the year, so it makes little sense to put them on a payroll.

I don’t know how Billy handles the walk ons. I know he doesn’t handle their NIL money, and I know that walk ons are not allowed to receive all of the benefits that scholarship athletes receive, whether Billy wants them to or not.

Most walk ons are kids that want to go to that particular school. A PWO offer can help get a kid who may not make the cut to get through the regular admissions process go to the school they always dreamed of. It also allows them to be a part of a huge football program, and continue to be involved in a sport that they’ve enjoyed playing growing up. Some kids want to coach and an offer like this can let them see first hand how a big time D1 program operates. I can’t tell you what every kid is thinking or why they would take that offer, but most of them know they likely won’t see the field. The guy I know that joined the team as a pwo wanted to attend FL. He had great grades and extracurriculars, but that by itself doesn’t necessarily get you in the door nowadays. PWO offer let him bypass some of that, go to the school he wanted to attend, and continue to practice and play with his brother. He actually got to see the field a few times and made the travel squad one year he was here.

I never said your NIL entity couldn’t pay the tuition for all your walk ons. I said you aren’t going to lure top prospects here with walk on offers. Scholarship athletes receive way more than just tuition. BYU’s NIL entity paying tuition for their walkons does not make them equal to the BYU scholarship athletes.

I can say with almost certainty that we do not have a system in place that would handle all of the “scholarship benefits” for non-scholarship, walk on, athletes. This would be a third party system, the school would not even be allowed to handle it. If this third party system was in place, you would have heard about it. I’m sure our PWO’s are allowed to communicate with our NIL entities, and some may even get some loot. I would bet my house none of them are getting paid anywhere near what it would cost to cover all of the things scholarship athletes are given. Even if you did cover the costs, the scholarship athletes have all that stuff arranged and taken care of for them. A walk on with NIL money would still have to handle all of those things themselves and there are still a lot of things they will not be allowed to participate in or have access to, no matter how much money they’re given.

Truth be told those players complained that they didn't get paid by the main backer of that initiative. I hope we do better.

Just curious how long ago were they there? I know everything you said to be true, but curious if with the ncaa relaxing some of the rules lately if that trickled down to the walk ons. I was thinking meals, but as I typed the question realized that would still be a benefit. Aside from the costs, I don't think they can even eat with the team since they're at the training table which can't be great for moral/ camaraderie. I guess tutoring they could have relaxed, since they're "student athletes"

Also to your point of not luring top guys. Only so many players can dress for a game and even fewer can travel which already impacts the tail end of scholarship guys and at the end of the day these kids want to play.

7v7 tournament. Him, McCray and another kid we're after will all three be on campus for it. So there's interaction with stand but it's not like a straight up visit

Visiting that many schools is not say solid to me. I’m sure he’s some form of solid but when the ninth number changes, kids listen.

105 can be there and then there’s 85. Then there’s travel numbers. There are no restrictions on what those 105 can be in tgat scenario. I thought I read that pwo’s did get all the meals? I can definitely see the top few teams carrying 105.

He should get some El Indio tacos, that might help change his mind.
