I would take EJ over Mertz.

While EJ would occasionally throw into triple coverage and couldn't hit receivers in stride, he still had a good completion percentage and was a talented runner.

There's a reason Mullen gave him the nod over AR and we learned that this season.

Mullen came out and said AR needed to work on his consistency before he was ready to be a starter but the fans apparently knew better than the guy who observed them both every day.

I don’t expect the remaining schollys to go to hs kids. We must have several from the portal.

Had AR played earlier, he may have been better this year. That’s what that first round grade is about.

AR's completion percentage was ~53 compared to EJs ~67.

If we're speculating, has EJ stuck it out here, we'd probably have 2-3 more wins this season vs having AR mentally collapse and kill offensive drives. But none of that matters now, it is what it is.

I'm with you. It is a great class. Just tired of the "we are all gonna die crowd" because we aren't pulling top 5. No reason to expect that right now.

Feel free to continue and complain about it all the time. Let me know if that changes anything.

If we take Mertz, I wonder if we take a developmental type who's willing to fight and be a backup with several years to get some spacing. No idea who that would be

I am telling myself that this would be the role for Mertz. I know, but it gives me hope.

I'm not sure that's definitive, I doubt EJ would have been anywhere close to his previous production with the options that we had at receiver. Plus he got benched at ASU.

I'm not a big fan of Mertz as a starter, but he would be a very good back-up.

Based on this dig at our coaches, I’m believing that he was slowly pushed out and we stopped contacting him for one reason or another.

So basically they gave him more attention and it is easier to play there.

Just saw a tweet saying he was not sent an NLI from UF and it was retweeted . So the staff must of known this was happening prior to yesterday when the story started surfacing.

    EJ was benched at ASU

In no world is starting a guy who got benched at ASU over a 1st rounder a good move

    Infinitely worse than Fields/Fromm

Well... let's look at the realities... although Nixon IS 6'4"... but he is only 210 to 215 lbs?
I am guessing that we need an edge that will have more bulk, etc.
    Why?
The last two years of watching Florida Football has been the absolutely worst two years of us not holding the edge that I have seen since 1972.
    Honest!

The USSC basically legalized personal services contracts for players. There is no policing that. It was always going to go this way. And, hate to break it to you, but it's just going to get worse. Just wait for the transfer portal bidding wars (if they haven't started already) and mid-season recruiting of other people's players. Fun times!
