So it seems two of the most blatant nil exploiters (Miami and tamu) are in complete disarray. Gee, who saw that coming…

Our experience was nothing like that. Our daughter fell behind a taller and more athletic middle hitter and stayed behind her. We understood completely. Never heard complaints from other parents except for the cost of playing club VB. Wish she had stayed in orchestra and we had saved all the money we spent on VB.

AAU parents are the worst. They think their above average son or daughter will be an ATM someday. Some try to intimidate the coach.

The $cum coach is spot on.

The biggest change I have seen in swimming is parents disinterest in helping out the team or organization. Things like running concessions, serving on the board, officiating, etc. Of course, not every parent has the capacity to get involved in their kids teams, but now even ones who have the time would rather sit in the bleachers and they're the first to complain.

Social media era imo. Parents see other kid sensation and think that's the future for their kid and try to force it on coaches rather than let kids develop organically.

The real shame of it is that 99% of the parents would do their kid a much, much bigger favor setting all the ridiculous youth sports money aside in a 529 plan and making sure the kids work hard in the classroom. Much higher rate of return.

    Yep.

Unfortunately there a lot of really talented kids that get priced out of a lot of these clubs as well. Most get pulled from academies which aren’t cheap.

I dont follow youth/amateur US soccer and tennis like that but i read thats what has happened to those two sports….talented kids being priced out and thats why we’ve fallen behind in those two sports

    100%

It’s insane what we’ve spent on our oldest to get him to college ball. Doing the same for our other son. A lot of the academies have set up scholarships and I usually donate through my business to help cover at least 1 kids costs. However that’s just fees, there are travel expenses as well. It’s a shame because there is some talent out there. You look at the top D1 programs and most of the kids are from other countries.

I've heard this before. I think a lot of parents with kids in high level sports understand the fact that they could save a similar amount for scholarship money as paying for all of the travel, training and tournaments. That being said, scholarship money is not the only reason for putting kids in high level sports. My daughters are demonstrably tougher physically and mentally by playing softball and volleyball with and against great players regardless of whether she ever gets a dime for college. The amount of work and focus it takes to compete at a high level prepares a person for life well after sports. They understand what it takes to continue to excel and grow as people as well as athletes.

I've looked pretty closely at whether its worth it because I have two pretty good athletes in my house. The Drive Group did a study of Fortune 500 companies and 95% of those surveyed had CEOs that played college sports. Ernst & Young also did a study of 821 executives and of those, 90% of the women included in that group had played college sports. It is not all about scholarship money, but is about leadership and life skills as much as anything and I see it as an investment in my kids' future.

I'm not saying all parents understand this, and some are just scumbags for sure, but just putting money in a 529 doesn't do all that I mentioned above.
