An amazing medical breakthrough that comes one hundred and fifteen years after Sickle Cell was first described in medical journals. A team of doctors at Cohen Children's Medical Center in Long Island treated the 21 year old man who has been suffering with Sickle Cell pain since he was 2 months old. The novel genetic process is fantastic, using the patients own stem cells and mapping them onto a virus. After which the reproducing cells that created the sickle cell anomaly can be isolated and discarded while at the same time the healthy hemoglobin reproducing cells harvested back and injected back into the patient (I assume back into the bone marrow but I cannot find that explicitly written anywhere).

Fortunately, this treatment was approved for use in the United States by LyfGenia in 2024.

Long Island man is first in New York history to be cured of sickle cell anemia

But how can this be when Dugger told me viruses don't exist?

No one said that Sickle Cell was a virus, stop being so obtuse.

I'm with Duggers on this one. What do viruses have to do with Sickle Cell?

yes sickle cell is genetic and not a virus - I pray this is a permanent treatment

This is incredible news! With Trump being president and all does science get credit or are we to assume it was magic?

Not an expert, but my understanding is this: stem cells can produce a number of different types of cells. Researchers only want marrow cells that produce healthy red blood cells. By splicing the stem cell to a manipulated virus, it encourages (this is the blank I cannot fill in since this is not my field) the stem cells to produce the marrow cells, which produce healthy hemoglobin that you want.

    “Manipulate a virus.”

    Step One - find one.

Step Two - waiting on Step One.

Not sure why the headline was so specific about that. I did go to LyfGenia's website and found out that 3 initial patients were chosen for this treatment (they do not have enough experts yet to do more). Maybe this young man was just the first of those 3?

In my layman terms from reading the OP, the virus was just used as a production source for the cure. It didn't say sickle cell was a virus.
