I think you're correct about talking heads generally and how things have changed. People probably wouldn't watch someone like Walter Cronkite read the news to us anymore. For one thing, we can't even seem to agree on facts. Notably, Cronkite was a college dropout but had a passion for journalism. It's my understanding that news divisions back then weren't really considered their own profit centers.

These days, we expect people giving us the news to provide analysis - often times people want to hear what they already believe, which is what Tucker was offering to his viewers. Of course, nobody can be a subject matter expert about everything. I used to really enjoy Charlie Rose because he was very knowledgeable generally and had on really smart people for longer-form discussions. He also didn't feel the need to have a hot take on every breaking news story. He also talked about the arts and business and areas that aren't inherently political.

There is still some good content out there, but I find I get less and less on tv and more on podcasts. I'd like for one of the cable news channels to try a Charlie Rose format and see if it's successful.

Here’s what I’d like to see. There should be a newscast where the anchor doesn’t report facts, instead he puts a list of five possible facts about a subject on the screen, and viewers get to vote on which one will become a fact. This would be a big hit, even bigger than Carlson. Better than hearing what they want to hear, viewers could actually determine the facts they want with their votes.

Does anyone have a Murdoch email address?

I don't watch Fox but I was on the road last week and it was on in the breakfast area of the Hampton Inn I was staying at. Every single story had an 'us vs. them' mentality. Red vs blue, conservative vs liberal. It seems constant, 24 hours a day. Other networks might lean left, but I don't see the constant 'us v them' mentality on them the way it is on Fox.

Yeah. Interactive fiction like a "choose your own adventure" game, but involving complex world events and real world implications.

That can't be true. I've been assured that Obama and Biden are sole reason for the division in this country.

Lachlan is a guy and has pretty much gotten his position by mirroring his father's politics and business practices. BTW, I bet Suzanne Scott isn't long for there either, as I bet they put the weight of this on her. It has to be somebody without the name Murdoch.

oops, too bad the other brother didn't win the succession battle. he seems like someone who could do good with a media outlet. I guess that is why he resigned, too honest.

I suspect that Lachlan will just wait until Rupert dies and then sell the company and move into a house worth 9 figures near Sydney. The brother hurt himself with the News of the World/Sky stuff in Europe, which left the hole that Lachlan exploited. The whole thing is just crazy.

I’ve heard the opposite. James and the sisters have the clout to oust him when Rupert croaks. They might still sell but not to a consortium of evil GOP billionaires like Thiel, Mercers, Crowe and the like….

Depends on who he puts in charge of the trust. Lachlan has ingratiated himself to the father while James and Elisabeth are currently not part of the company. If he leaves the trust to the three of them combined, then maybe. I doubt that the Thiel/Mercer types have the kind of money to buy the whole company (which has a lot of global properties). I'd put my money on it being somebody like the Saudis or Qataris.

I predict that old Rupert before dying will make a deal with Satan. The Evil One in disguise will take over FoxNews (he has been there so much in spirit), in exchange for which Rupert's quarters in hell will at least be air-conditioned.

I usually change the channel to re-runs if I Love Lucy and hide the remote.
