National security-minded republicans find their balls and (finally) split with Trump over his foolish foreign policy ideas.

Trump splits with GOP lawmakers on national security, raising alarm

National security-minded Republican lawmakers are alarmed by what they see as a growing split between themselves and former President Trump on key issues, including the war in Ukraine, preserving the NATO alliance and protecting Taiwan from Chinese aggression.

Trump’s actions over the past three weeks have stirred confusion and concern among Republican senators who voted earlier this year to approve tens of billions of dollars to contain Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and to deter China from attacking Taiwan, an important U.S. ally and trading partner.

Defense-minded GOP senators viewed Trump’s invitation to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to visit him at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after the NATO summit in Washington as a worrisome development, given Orbán’s close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his efforts to undermine NATO’s support for the defense of Ukraine.

GOP senators who support U.S. involvement in the war in Ukraine were dismayed when Trump selected Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who led the opposition to the Ukrainian assistance package, as his running mate.

Federal investigators suspected that Egypt may have bribed Trump with $10 million in cash

In January 2017, a bank manager at the National Bank of Egypt in Cairo received a letter from an organization linked to the Egyptian intelligence service asking them “kindly withdraw” about $10 million in cash from the organization’s account. That took place just five days before Donald Trump became president, The Washington Post reported in an exclusive on Friday, revealing that federal investigators believed the withdrawn cash may have been intended as a bribe for the Republican.

According to bank records, the state-run branch emptied a considerable share of Egypt’s reserve of U.S. currency by filling two large bags with bundles of $100 bills weighing a combined 200 pounds. Later four men arrived to carry away the bags.

This sizable withdrawal caught the attention of federal investigators early in 2019, reviving a secret criminal investigation that had begun two years prior into allegations contained in a classified U.S. intelligence assessment that Egypt's dictator, Abdel Fatah El-Sisi, had agreed to give $10 million to Trump's campaign. In office, Trump repeatedly praised Sisi, his administration releasing hundreds of millions of dollars in aid that had been held up over concern about Egypt's abysmal human rights record.

Candidates for federal office are barred from accepting foreign donations. There is no proof that any money made it to Trump's coffers, but as the Post reported that could in part be due to the fact they were unable to subpoena the former president's bank records for the time he was in office. Trump had, in October 2016, injected $10 million into his own campaign in the form of a loan; this after meeting with Sisi when he was in New York for a trip to the United Nations.

At a Georgia rally on Saturday, Donald Trump congratulated Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for the historic prisoner exchange arranged by President Joe Biden that freed 16 people wrongfully imprisoned in Russia, including American journalist Evan Gershkovich.

Trump also disparaged the deal as inferior to deals he made, and in the same breath lied both about the number of prisoners freed while he was president, and about how they were freed.

“By the way, I’d like to congratulate Vladimir Putin for having made yet another great deal,” Trump said. “Did you see the deal we made? Now look, we want to get people in. We got 59 hostages — I never paid anything.”

Trump’s claim about the number of prisoners he freed has fluctuated somewhat — he’s previous claimed to have freed 58 prisoners. While there were prisoners held in other countries that were freed during the Trump administration, the number is closer to 7 people total.

Judge Chutkan could jumpstart Trump election interference case now that it’s back in her court (msn.com)

A federal judge in Washington, DC, on Friday should regain control of the criminal case against former President Donald Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, leaving the historic criminal case’s fate in her hands less than 100 days before the November election. Chutkan has long signaled she wanted the case presented to a jury before voters go to the polls in November, initially pushing for a March trial date. But the Supreme Court interceded earlier this year and put the case on pause to consider Trump’s claims of presidential immunity.

By granting Trump sweeping immunity for official acts as president, the Supreme Court’s ruling may gut special counsel Jack Smith’s case. That leaves Chutkan with a number of crucial decisions to make, including whether Trump’s efforts to undo the 2020 election results count as official acts.

While it’s still not clear when – if ever – the case will go to trial, observers believe Chutkan will move quickly to move the criminal proceedings along given her judicial style. “She likes to move cases along,” the same attorney told CNN of Chutkan. “She doesn’t want to want a lot of talk, she’ll just rule.”

Five major motions are pending before the judge, four of which she could rule on immediately. Sources say that some of the attorneys involved in the case believe Chutkan may have worked on writing opinions for outstanding motions while the case was paused, and that those motions could quickly appear on the court docket.

Chutkan rejects Trump’s argument that the DOJ was acting vindictively at the direction of Biden:

“There is no indication that President Biden ever expressed any such comments to the Attorney General or the Justice Department, much less that such comments actually resulted in politically motivated action,” Chutkan wrote.

In a twist, a key allegation liberal critics have leveled at Attorney General Merrick Garland — that prosecutors were slow to turn their focus to Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot — redounded to the Justice Department’s benefit in the selective prosecution ruling Chutkan issued Saturday.

Chutkan said a Post article detailing the probe’s deliberate pace “reflects conscientious investigation, not political animus.”

I would love to see the Consumption Tax studied in depth. I’d also like those it’s tidied with a luxury tax imposed as well, where goods over a certain price are taxed higher.

But tariffs are a different animal altogether.

Former President Donald Trump said he had "no choice" but to support electric vehicles after Tesla CEO Elon Musk "endorsed" him.

Trump then went on to criticize the EV industry at length.

Musk has long been a champion of the pivot to electric vehicles. His company, Tesla, has largely led the way in developing the industry, which for a time made Musk a darling of the climate-conscious left.

But Musk has more recently embraced conservative politics, especially the issue of free speech. Musk bought Twitter in 2022, rebranded it to X, and has dismantled many of the checks and balances meant to limit hateful speech and misinformation on the platform.

Dozens of well-known Republicans including a couple of former Trump White House staffers have switched allegiance to endorse Kamala Harris in the latest blow for Donald Trump.

The Harris presidential campaign on Sunday launched a “Republicans for Harris” drive, which it says already has the public endorsement of almost 30 Republican moderates who reject “the chaos, division and violence of Donald Trump and his Project 2025 Agenda.”

They include a former Trump White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, and Olivia Troye, who advised Vice President Mike Pence on national security matters.

“I might not agree with Vice President Kamala Harris on everything, but I know that she will fight for our freedom, protect our democracy and represent America with honor and dignity on the world stage ,” Grisham said in a statement.

The federal criminal case over whether former President Donald Trump tried to steal the 2020 election will start moving forward later this month, though it still remains unlikely to go to trial before the 2024 election.

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on July 1 in a 6-3 decision that former presidents have immunity for official acts conducted while in office - but not for unofficial acts - the case was handed back to the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan resumed control of the case again Friday and issued her first order Saturday morning, which denied Trump's motion to dismiss the federal criminal charges brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith. But Chutkan also ruled the Republican's 2024 presidential nominee can refile his request later, once questions about his immunity have been resolved.

The Supreme Court tasked Chutkan with deciding which acts are official and which are not official and thus what charges can be brought before a jury. Her decisions are also expected to be appealed. Kick starting the legal maneuvering, Chutkan set an Aug. 16 hearing in Washington, D.C., to consider the schedule for Trump’s felony criminal case. She also ordered both Trump's lawyers and Smith's Justice Department team to propose a schedule for moving forward by Friday.

Musk isn't the only example of Trump altering his policy positions to suit large campaign contributors. He favored banning TikTok until he started receiving contributions from one a billionaire who also happened to hold a large position in Byte Dance the Chinese parent company of TikTok and then there was his position on crypto currencies which he (accurately as far as I'm concerned) referred to a scam. Since receiving large contributions from pro-crypto techbros he started advocating for less regulation of cryptocurrencies.
