Russia Russia Russia. If we had a properly functioning justice system the Orange shitgibbon would be cooling his heels in a supermax. First world countries should have no problem (and have) jailing their presidents.

Treason and sedition should never be counternanced.

LOL, in the adding insult to injury category, a UK judge has just ordered Trump to pay $384,000 to Christopher Steele's firm over the Steele Dossier. Trump had sued claiming The Steele Dossier had violated British data privacy rights and harmed his reputation. (Is that even possible at this point?) The judge tossed his lawsuit and Trump has 28 days to pay the money to Mr. Steele.

I find the thought of Trump stroking a check to Steele immensely satisfying.

UK judge orders Trump to pay $380K to man who penned infamous 'Steele Dossier'

Chubb, registered in Switzerland, well know for insuring Russian oil and gas exports, is the owner of the bond company that posted the bond for the soon to be confirmed republican nomineee.

this foreign entity, directly linked to extensive business relationships with the oligarchs, has financial leverage over the man that will soon be receiving national security briefings as the republican nominee. what kind of f'd up bizarroworld am I living in and how do I get out?

'Matter of national security': Mysterious entity that guaranteed Trump’s $91M bond questioned (msn.com)

That $91.63 million includes the full $83.3 million judgment, along with a 9% statutory interest the State of New York tacks onto surety bonds. That money has been set aside in a court-managed account to be paid to Carroll in the event Trump loses his appeal. The ex-president's bond was guaranteed by the Federal Insurance Company — a New York-based subsidiary of the company Chubb Group LLC, which is headquartered in Switzerland. In 2018, Chubb CEO Evan Greenberg served on a trade advisory committee in the Trump White House. The Washington Post reported that "it was not clear from court records what collateral Trump presented to obtain the bond from Chubb."

"In fact, Chubb called Russian oil and gas 'one of the most promising activities' of its Russian operations,'" RAN wrote. "The insurer was recently backing Nord Stream 2, a massive, controversial natural gas pipeline built by Gazprom, the world’s largest producer of gas and a majority Russian state-owned fossil fuel company (which also happens to be funded by JPMorgan Chase)."
    ......................
"But one thing’s sure: Trump is beholden to someone for a lot of money," Weissmann wrote.

In response to Weissmann's tweet, attorney and journalist Daniel Miller expressed concern, opining that the bond guarantee was a "matter of national security," adding "the public has to know this information before voting in November."

It's entirely possible Trump didn't provide collateral. It would be an extremely risky business decision, but there is nothing I'm aware of that legally requires the bond to be fully or partially collateralized.

agreed. this foreign entity will have a $96M unsecured debt on the person receiving foreign intelligence briefings.

how is that legal? you couldn't get a lowest level security clearance with that kind of financial mark

Trump is not actually getting those intelligence briefings...at this point. He gets one after he becomes the official nominee and would not get regular briefings unless he became, God forbid, president-elect.

The bond has not been posted. The bond has been secured.

There is a hearing tomorrow to see if Carroll is willing to accept this particular bond. It comes with some odd and absurd conditions like it can't be cashed out if the appeal fails for 60 days.

Also, if it's Russian money, could it be subject to US sanctions and be not worth the paper it's printed on?

apparently $96M didn't teach him anything. I wonder how the chubb who posted his bond feels about this..

Trump Attacks E. Jean Carroll Again—Running Risk Of Another Defamation Suit (msn.com)

Former President Donald Trump once again attacked writer E. Jean Carroll Saturday at a campaign rally in Georgia, claiming he didn’t know her and potentially opening himself up for more defamation allegations, just one day after he posted a more than $90 million bond for a defamation verdict he’s appealing.

While speaking at a rally in Rome, Georgia, on Saturday Trump blasted the Carroll verdict, saying it was based on “false accusations” made about him by “a woman that I knew nothing about.”

Trump blamed “Democrat operatives” for Carroll’s case against him, claiming her lawyers are all Democrat operatives—a likely nod to billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman who funded Carroll’s prosecution of Trump—who are “funding and directing” her.

Probably because he didn't pay the $96 million and has no intent on reimbursing whoever did.

Guy’s clearly crazy. Carrol should probably steer clear of 5th Ave for awhile.

will damages go up if he keeps repeating it? Is there incentive for them to let him keep going on before they file for their next payment?

$65M in punitive damages trying to teach him to STFU. Apparently it wasn't enough. As Wasserman says, money alone isn't enough of a deterrent to him. This can't help his appeal and can only end up costing him even more. He is an opposition lawyers dream, just keeps paying out. This started with a $5M fine, then a $91M fine when he couldn't shut up, what is next?

Ex-DOJ Attorney Says Trump 'On The Attack Again' After Finding 'Sugar Daddy To Bail Him Out' On $91M Jean Carroll Defamation Judgment: 'Money Is An Insufficient Deterrent Here' (msn.com)

“Now that Trump has found a sugar daddy to bail him out on his $91 M defamation judgment, he is on the attack again,” said Weissmann in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Money is an insufficient deterrent here,” he said.
    ........
Throwing caution to the winds, Trump said in the Georgia campaign rally denied knowing Carroll. “$91 million based on false accusations made about me by a woman that I knew nothing about, didn’t know, never heard of. I know nothing about her. She wrote a book. She said things. And when I denied it — I said, ‘It’s so crazy. It’s false’ — I get sued for defamation,” he reportedly said.

Why would it be illegal? If Chubb wants to guarantee the payment, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. And, I bet Carroll is thrilled that she knows her judgment is now secured (although the punitive damages might be a tough sell at the appellate level)

Isn’t Chubb is a publicly traded corp, so a “gift” actually might not be legal. Definitely not in shareholder interests. The CEO may be a Trump backer but the company is not his piggybank.

Presumably it’s collaterized, if not, there should be serious questions asked. Interesting that Trump went right back to defaming Carol once posting the bond. Another backer instantly made a fool of. :emoji_joy:
