the ONLY way an illegal is gainfully employed is by working under the table. Having owned restaurants for 10+ years when an employee gets hired you have to fill out an I-9 form. You have to physically see the original documents of Citizenship or a work visa to fill this form out. If you allow illegal aliens to work for you you risk fines and imprisonment.

In the last year it's varied from around 10% to 50%.

Part of reason why immigration reform is needed is to give the 8 million undocumented workers protection and a way to fix employment issues. Everyone working here should have the same protections and make at least minimum wage.

There are also DACA recipients that are technically undocumented but given protected status permission to work legally in the country. They have ITIN or individual tax numbers. These kids should be given a pathway to citizenship.

Quick question, bill, how does wanting protections for undocumented workers and citizenship for DACA show those on the left want a permanent underclass?

We've been having the same arguments here for decades. If Trump is successful with mass deportations, I have to ask, how do we fill these jobs? Especially at a time when we have 1 million more job openings than we have on unemployment? When states like Arizona, Alabama, and Georgia passed draconian immigration laws, they all struggled to fill the vacated jobs and lost billions in GDP. And that was during a recession.

Well you can say you posted it but you didn't. There's nothing you've posted that shows we let in 10-20 million in the last 4 years. You posted something about there being around 10 million encounters, but not all encounters are let in. And that's no where near to the high end of your claim of 20 million. And current estimates of the total undocumented population range from about 12 to 16 million. But you say 10 to 20 million of them came in the last 4 years. That's beyond ridiculous and you know it.

So how about this? I'll go easy on you. You go find some support of your high end claim of 20 million. If you can't, come back and say you couldn't find any support for that claim and that it was an exaggeration on your part. Deal? All you got to do to show a little integrity here is to say, 'yeah, I exaggerated'.

Democrats, especially Biden, championed the flow of illegals to gain seats in Co

azcat, I am always going to be in favor of enforcing the law. If people who own companies are violating the law on the hiring of illegals then I favor going after them as well. I am hopeful the mass deportations will take place. If you want the open jobs filled then you quit making it more favorable for those not working to stay on welfare. I followed the law as an employer, why shouldn't I expect other business owners to do the same.

I had lunch at my favorite restaurant Sunday. My server, a well spoken white woman in mid 50s, gleefully announced that the illegals had started deporting themselves, afraid what Trump would do to them. She also said the lines of people heading north to the US Mexico border had turned around on their own and are heading back to their respective home countries for the same reason.

According to her, Trump has been busy. He's met with farmers, food corporation heads and grocery store execs and they've all agreed to lower food prices significantly after the inauguration. Also, China has agreed to monitor the pricing of all their goods so that tariffs won't be necessary.

Our country is in a lot of trouble.

Not sure what your point is, but it seems you agree with my plan, which is to Hell with the consequences to our economy. And while we're pissed off, let's impose tariffs on Chinese imports.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a business so I don't care if every last one of the illegals get the boot. As for the tariffs, my wife and I are at an age and in an income bracket where they will only mildly affect us, so I've no problem with Trump laying down the law.

Do you know this person or did she just start volunteering all this to a stranger. Either way, it's really weird that a waitress would be saying that stuff on the job. I guess they just can't help themselves.

The biggest beneficiaries of welfare are the elderly with SS and kids with the reduced/free lunch program. Really think these are great replacements for immigrant workers? Another 10% of SNAP recipients already work, and many are physically or mentally unable to hold down any job, let alone the average immigrant job, which requires physical labor. The myth of the welfare queen is exactly that. A myth. And when we're paying $15 for subs, don't come crying to me.

I showed over 10 million that the US knows about. You are just ignoring the unknowns. It's ok, put your head back in the sand. I get it, you've had a bad 7 days. Oh well. Another L for you. They are piling up!

Welfare reform happened almost 30 years ago. You can't live long-term on welfare at this point.

The participation rate for people in the 25-54 age range is 83.3%, higher than it was 20 years ago. The participation rate for the elderly is also up. There aren't potential workers sitting around refusing to work.

Civilian labor force participation rate by age, sex, race, and ethnicity

The issue is that we have an aging population.

LOL as much as I hate to admit it back about twenty someodd years ago there was a contest in the Pub to see who could log the most posts. About 10k of those posts were just typing one letter then hitting enter. I did quite well in that contest before the mods stepped in and called it off.

So you're not going to say you exaggerated? Shocker. This is from your link. You're own link says you're wrong:

The number of encounters is not a count of individuals who stay in the US as some migrants will be returned and the same person can be recorded trying to enter multiple times.

These figures don't include people who may have crossed the border undetected.

The US Department of Homeland Security has estimated there were 11 million illegal migrants living in the US as of January 2022.

It says about a fifth of them arrived in 2010 or later but the majority arrived before this time, some as early as the 1980s.

How many migrants have crossed the US border illegally?
