NYT vs Forbes. I guess we’ll see who’s right. If Trump does show up, then I will join in the criticism of him.

I don't know that either one is going to be right or wrong. Neither one states that he definitely will or won't be there. They're both just talking to people and quoting them, which is pretty much what the media does in a case like this.
The NYT, which probably has more inside sources, writes that while Trump has been invited, "Mr. Trump does not plan to attend the event, according to a person familiar with his plans."
Forbes' sources are Trump's campaign saying he won't be there and the event organizer saying it's a 99.9 percent chance he will.

Any thoughts on my earlier question: Do you think there's any way that would happen at Trump's golf club without his approval?

Meanwhile, a little background from the NYT story:

Right? It's not being held at some random location. It is being held at a Trump property. That is no accident, yet the deflection bs continues. Trump has been glorifying these criminals from day one, and so have his supporters and enablers.

If you had broadened it to say without his knowledge, then I would agree with you that it probably couldn’t happen without his knowledge.

Without his approval? I don’t know. I can imagine someone mentioning it in passing and Trump saying “fine.”

An interesting question would be is that group having to pay to use the facility.

By the way, don’t get me wrong. I don’t like that Trump makes out that those people are somehow heroes or political prisoners. They are criminals.

My questions is, if it was just tourists or Antifa, as regularly claimed, why the need for an "award gala?"

There is a public perception trump is intertwined with his properties. Dems will tattoo Trump with this event, even if he’s not there. Not too mention any video leaked from it. Just imagine the ad: video of Jan 6th with cops screaming in pain and getting beaten with juxtaposition of a “gala” celebrating the thugs in trump gear that did it.

Good point. I doubt trump actually shows up or even makes a video appearance. But by having it a trump golf course he gets some benefit of association from the aggrieved niche of voters but has plausible deniability (if he doesn’t show) that he supports it.

It's not NYT v Forbes. It's a campaign spokesperson versus the event organizer.

It's two years in a row at the same facility. You believe this happens without Trump's permission? He attended last year's event and stated he was donating to the fund. Trump's photos are prominently displayed all over the event's website.

Really wish I had recorded my TV for my post #17, but I saw a Trump campaign advisor very clearly state that the campaign is very strongly advising him to stay away from this event, Jan 6th and election denialism to address a question on this event. That was said on MSM (late night CNN).

I can guess with 99% certainty what happened here. Trump was stewing about the stolen election due to his narcissism and wanted to invite some of his fellow “prosecuted patriots” to an event at his fancy golf course. They make him feel complete. Of course he didn’t want to pay and needs money, so he made it a fund raiser.

His campaign staff saw it and thought holy shit this looks bad, ABORT.
