I’ll tell you since my company imports billions. We buy an item for $4 from China. It shows up and we pay the Chinese company $4. Then the government charges us $1 tariff for bringing that product into the US. We pay that $1 to the government. Then we charge the customer for the full cost of $5 plus our profit level. We pay. Were he capable of articulating what he was trying to say, his “we’ll decide to do with the baby” at least has some factual basis (albeit a kind of misleading one). It was the former Governor of Virginia (not West Virginia), and was a hypothetical discussion of how a baby born with severe deformities that gave it a very short life expectancy may be treated (that was essentially along the lines of the mother and the doctors could decide whether to provide extraordinary care or make the baby comfortable and allow it to die).
