Trump: U.S.military spending could be cut in half- Now 8 percent a year

We need to cut our defense budget and not be the world’s policeman.

However, we need to find more efficient ways to prevent whatever a conflict with China would look like (we are going to send in our marines like this is WWII or the Navy Seals like the GWOT).

And saying we are going to cut it in half so communist China will just do that too (oh and Russia) is a level of stupid that is so far beyond me.

 

I don't think China would ever go to war with us anyway. One of the other perks of globalization is how intertwined all of our economies are now. Full war between China and the US would be economic suicide for both countries. Plus the days of massive boots on the ground wars are over (I think this is what you meant to say but mistyped)

I don't know about half, but any attempt at lowering the cost of the government has to include the military budget.

 

Cutting aid to the poor will get Trump yelled at by liberals. Cutting funding for the defense industry will get a third consecutive assassination attempt on Trump by another conservative.

Guy makes no sense.

He railed against Obama for years about “destroying our military”, when all the sequester did was hold it flat for a few years in Obama’s term. Trump himself has proposed ramped up military spend, now cut it in half? Good luck!

Personally I think another sequester would be a better goal. Maybe can do a good faith effort to shave $50 Billion or something from contracts. Hard to see “cut it in half” as serious.

I knew this would infuriate the chickenhawks, but the reason for our pressed down, heaped up, flowing over military budget is because it costs lots of money to maintain hundreds of military installations in dozens of countries to remind the world were Murica dammit!

“National defense” is a grotesque misnomer.

 

I'd like to recant my opinion. I felt this way for a long time but I hadn't taken into account the fact that we've alienated our closest allies. So I'm not sure we can rely on them for military support anymore

I agree, the dude is just flailing all over the place making waves, any waves, for attention. What will be fun is watching the right-wing war machine nudging him off of this. As a plan, cutting defense spending in half is a great idea. As a reality, the Pub party has zero interest in doing that.

 

If you are the EU/Russia/BRICS and no longer consider the US reliable, why wouldn't you want China and the US to duke it out and weaken each other?

 

The cynic in me thinks that laudable as retrenching from hegemony and saving trillions might be, we know we can’t possibly keep up with China and so we’re hoping they’ll voluntarily slow down.
