Yeah, or a backstab. But contesting trump in 24 is a nonstarter, and if he stays on his own, there’s a good chance his star wanes before 28. State governors tend to have a limited time in the spotlight, so if he rolls the dice he may be yesterday’s news by the time that election heats up.

Really good point. 28 is a long way out. No telling where we’ll be and politics is getting crazier every day.

If DeSantis takes a VP under Trump in 24', then his 28' star will shine about as bright as Pence's star is shining today. (not very bright)

The Donald is still number one among Republican voters.

will the pub party figure out a way to clear the field for DeSantis? what info could they discretely give someone that might get Trump either charged or otherwise disqualified from office?

Polls don't matter. Nobody cares about Trump.

While polls today are somewhat meaningless (in 2014 no one expected Trump to win the Republican nomination in 2016 much less the general election), a majority of Republicans are still adoring fans of Trump whom they have elevated to the level of a near deity. If Trump is indicted and I do think that he has committed numerous crimes, his fans would see it as confirmation that the Deep State is out to get their Dear Leader and would most likely rally around him.

Same thing that happened in 2016… Even if trump doesn’t have a majority, he has the base, and the rest of the clown car will divide the non-Trump votes to point that Trump sails to victory…. Don’t blame me, I voted for whoever wasnt Trump (Joe Walsh?) in 2020….

I heard that same crap during the Vietnam protests at UF when I got back in '67. The hard hats cursing at and picking fights with the protesters were as wrong then as you are now. Such angry and ignorant people - thankfully a minority - will always be with us, displaying the ugly side of the human race. Trump and his supporters are sure doing that now.

‘Disaster’ for GOP: Former Trump lawyer says his 'uncontrolled ego is his own worst enemy’

"“One thing the Democrats know for certain is that Trump’s uncontrolled ego is his own worst enemy. They are praying they are able to goad him into an announcement for a 2024 presidential run," Cobb said. “A 2024 declaration of his candidacy serves no interest but his self-defeating and overwhelming need for relevance, attention and money. Such an announcement also does not inoculate him from criminal investigation."

The interview came a week after Cobb laid out a roadmap for prosecutors investigating Trump on CNN.

“He is a disaster for the Republican Party for which he prevented a Senate majority in 2020 and, as time will demonstrate, has already done the same for 2022 with his endorsements of unelectable candidates all based on their loyalty or his own driving desire for revenge," Cobb said. “The Big Lie has been good only for Trump and has brought him millions in donations, which some evidence suggests may have been mishandled. The Big Lie, and the related violence, election interference and other perceived misconduct, was and is an affront to this nation and its first principles. It has permanently soiled the history pages and deepened the abyss that divides our country and continues to expand due to the delusions and lack of accountability of politicians in both parties."

Cobb does not believe Trump is fit to run for office in 2024.

“It should be disqualifying for Trump and his political acolytes, and would have been at any other time in our history. To modify a well known Seinfeld quote—SANITY NOW! The country needs desperately to move on with new and actual leadership from a younger generation," Cobb said.

I say no way he can hold off until midterms for an announcement.

And for him personally, he prolly shouldn’t. That is four more months of campaigning-not-campaigning for Desantis and up to now sneaky types like Hogan and Youngkin to set their own tables.

More than anything though, he’s already saying it out loud now. He can get limited run from dangling that, but won’t last four months. He’ll be compelled to ride some escalator (def not walk a ramp) back into the MSM before then.

Why would he, trump was voted…….out. It’s trump followers triggered and believing nutty conspiracies because they can’t cope with the reality Dear Leader was crushed in 2020.

If Trump is charged with or even convicted of a crime his hardcore supporters would probably embrace him even more. If that should happen, Trump will undoubtedly portray himself as the victim of the Deep State and his supporters would buy into that narrative pretty much the same way that the bought into the big lie that the election was stolen from him. Although it shouldn't be the case the only states that would prohibit him from running based on a criminal record would be states that he would have virtually no chance of carrying in any event.

'I Voted for Him Once. I'll Never Do It Again': Former Republican Senator Slams 'Unhinged' Trump

“Well, put it this way: I voted for him once. I’ll never do it again,” Simpson replied. “Does that answer your question?”

Simpson said Trump is “used up” and told Trump to “stop the squeal,” a riff on Trump’s “stop the steal” efforts to overturn the 2020 election he baselessly claimed was stolen from him. The former senator did not seem optimistic about Trump’s chances in 2024.

In the world of everything revolves around Trump, it would make sense for Trump to announce early, prior to 2022 elections. It would probably energize Democrats and reduce Republican chances of taking back Congress. If Democrats keep control, then it is easier to blame Democrats for any and everything and helps Trumps chances of winning in 2024.
