I think guns are blamed for making it easier, not the actual commission of the crime. For instance, this guy wouldn’t have been a threat with a Bowie knife in this situation but if he’d been able to remain concealed another 15 minutes would have been able to take out Trump. Maybe that’s not a distinction you care to draw but that’s how I interpret most of the remarks discussing gun legislation.

So it’s not the environment fostered by the MSM and liberals?

I’m no trump fan but I love how you conveniently left off the word Peacefully protest from his speech. You are good with inciting violence against a political opponent. Just own it.

The gun didn’t DO anything here, it’s not even clear the guy fired.

But just as in real shootings, it will be interesting to find out how and where he acquired the weapon with his record and the fact that he’s from Hawaii (unlikely he brought it from home). Could be some non law abiding local gun shop or pawn shop that just stepped in it, or maybe being an “internet crazy” he did a deal with someone online. Street thugs often get theirs from straight theft and gang affiliation, this guy probably transacted somewhat recently.

The only person “responsible” is the shooter.

The crazy rhetoric just nurtured an environment where this sort of thing can happen.

That said, if the roles were reversed, and Kamala Harris was shot at by someone who claimed this administration has weaponized the DOJ, is there any doubt that the left-wing narrative would be that Trump is responsible?

Here's some additional detail if you want to educate yourself. Saying "peacefully" once doesn't negate the numerous other times leading up to that where he was stoking outrage among his followers.

Sorry, I have no idea what website that was but I’m not wasting my time reading it. Send me something from a reputable source. So you agree he said peacefully protest. Thanks, discussion over.

The guy is a nutcase who shouldn't have been able to get an assault rifle. I think we're all glad he'll be locked away for a long time. But don't pretend Trump's words don't matter. Words do matter.

Just like a woman can say no, regardless of how she is dressed, Trump's rhetoric against immigrant groups and others that oppose him matters. What are we supposed to think when Trump says things like immigrants are poisoning the blood of the country?

Minor correction. Trump was only shot at once (unless you're counting multiple shots from the same person). Thanks to the Secret Service the gunman in West Palm Beach never got a shot off.

The thing is, Trump is the one with the crazy rhetoric. He’s the one retweeting violent memes, calling immigrants “vermin”, threatening to be “dictator for a day”, and just recently caused 33 bomb threats to be called in Springfield OH (so you have schools closed up there and some families afraid to leave their homes, supposedly the “proud boys” are up there). This is all Trump. Yes, not everyone doing the threats is a MAGA, maybe only some are and a bunch are hoaxes taking advantage of the chaos, but his lies (as well as Laura loomer and JD) created those conditions.

The problem you have with the mainstream media is that they report on and comment on the crazy that trump does. Do they jump on or go overboard? Abso-f’in-lutely. But the crazy rhetoric is nevertheless his to own and not sure it’s a fair ask for the media to ignore, “bothsides”, or just pretend that one of our presidential candidates isn’t a gd lunatic.

You may not like the idea the man is a “threat to democracy”, but it almost seems delusional to not see it as a legit discussion.

No way he could have passed a background check. A gun or pawn shop has to much to lose and to little to gain by selling him the gun without a background check. I have been in many Florida gun and pawn shops and have never been in one that would do anything underhanded. They are more likely to ask you to leave and refuse to sell you anything if you act just a little off in any way. My best guess was he went to a online gun sales site and met someone for a face to face deal. Of course I don't know, but that way is easy and the seller is legal in Florida. I would never do it as the chance of getting robbed are better than buying the gun. Could have been someone helping his cause gave it to him. Of course the gun was illegal for anyone to have with the serial number filed off.
