Trump Gives Florida Utility Workers Free Hotel Rooms for Hurricane Milton - Newsweek

The Doral Miami Resort, officially known as Trump National Doral Miami, is a luxury resort and golf club located in Doral, Florida, near Miami. Miami is like to be spared the brunt of Hurricane Milton's wrath, as it's south of where the storm is supposed to hit, but people in mobile homes were encouraged to evacuate.

Former President Donald Trump's son Eric Trump, shared a video of the linemen geting their room assignments on X, formally Twitter.

"Honored to have 275 incredible linemen from FPL at @TrumpDoral as they get ready to respond to the aftermath of Hurricane #Milton! You are amazing and the Trump Family, and entire state of Florida, appreciates you! Enjoy the rooms – they are the best in Florida! Be safe!" Eric posted.

Thank you, President Trump. What a great gift.

While Trump deserves some credit it's probably not costing him very much to donate space in rooms that would otherwise be vacant.

Eric's post doesn't say they are free. If they were free, he DEFINETLY would have posted that and made a big deal about it.

I don't know either way, and happy to see help from whatever the source. But even for regular folks evacuating, I heard DeSantis say that hotels were extending discounts due to the state of emergency. I would assume the linemens' lodging is paid up front or reimbursed after by the state or Feds?

Didn’t the Newsweek article indicate the rooms were”free” ie at no cost? Maybe Newsweek needs to be fact-checked by Politico and Media Matters.

If somebody we like donates millions we use it to tweak people who hate them.

When somebody we hate donates millions it’s just a tax write off.

Good point and you're almost certainly correct. I missed it and it could be like the time one of the Trump boys (do not recall whether it was Eric or Don, Jr) bragged about hosting a fund raiser for St. Jude's at a Trump club. What he failed to say was that the club billed the charity for the use of its facilities.

No doubt that FEMA funds will eventually find their way to Trump Doral, paying for the lodging, while he continues posting bashing comments on FEMA response. Eric posting in the 3rd person as the Trump Family is just weird.

I was curious how the process typically works with linemen and hotels and whether it's private charity or a situation where hotels are ultimately compensated with public funds. I am not questioning the accuracy of the article, but the details weren't clear to me.

Their home power companies are very likely billed. For Irma, we stayed in a big hotel that was putting up a lot of linemen. People cheered for them in the lobby areas when they would come in after working all day.

Maybe he did it for 100% altruistic reasons. good on him if he did.

Thing is, anyone who gives Trump the benefit of the doubt at this point is completely and blindly naive.

I think when someone rips off their own charity and is legally forbidden from running a charity in certain states......they lose some benefit of the doubt.

Wouldn't you agree? Or are we (you) totally forgoing reality and rationality in order to play the victim card?

Would have expected out of town linemen get a per Diem payment from their home employer, who then turns around and bills it to the power company who needs the assistance. The linemen themselves might have no invoice to show for the per Diem if “gifted” and thus not billable to the local utility company. Regardless, good for Trump giving them a place to stay.

My daughter played sports with a lineman's daughter. He said that when these kind of emergencies happen and you are selected to go, you have no choice or you will lose your job.
