Trump effect on NATO spending is 'staggering,' Secretary General says

"If we look at Trump 47, what happened in the last couple of weeks is really staggering," Rutte said of recent defense commitments. "The Europeans countries are spending a package of $800 billion on defense spending."

"When I first went to NATO, my first meeting, I noticed that very few people were paying, and if they were, they weren't paying their fair share," Trump said.

The U.S. contributes 3.4% of its GDP and about 16% of NATO's annual budget. Poland is in top place, contributing 4.1% of its GDP, followed by Estonia and the U.S, both at 3.4%, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

By 2024, all non-U.S. NATO allies spent the 2% target on average for the first time. Twenty-three out of the 32 total member countries will meet or exceed the 2% target, including France and Germany, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

Thanks to our Great President Trump, once again showing world how to lead

So much winning with those American workers who would have manufactured the planes and provided support and maintenance services .

Idk why people are excited by a militarized Europe. That has traditionally not gone well for anyone. Just wait till the nukes start proliferating.

One likely unintended consequence of Trump's embrace of Russia could be the end of US dominance of the military aircraft market. By demonstrating that the US can no longer be a trusted ally the Europeans will begin developing their own state of the art aircraft as well as other military equipment with the net result being a defense equivalent of Airbus or possibly Airbus itself which has now passed Boeing in the civilian airliner market and could very well do the same with jet fighters and air defense missiles as well as other military equipment and it's already happening on a small scale.

I think NATO members paying their agreed upon share is a good thing.

There were many possible pays to achieve that, however. Most all of them avoided the United States ceding hard and soft power to our allies and enemies alike.

It's hard to call this a win because we've knee capped ourselves in accomplishing it. I know isolationists here will disagree

Same exact conversation I had with my MaGA buddy who asked me my thoughts on DOGE. I'm all for cutting govt waste, doing it willy nilly with no functional plan is place is idiotic. Same with our current foreign policy.

The spending should be for the current and escalating cyber war.

Yup. And at this point, the best we can hope for is this is just a general idea, wrapped in crazed exuberance, and executed without competence.

I fear it's much more devious, however.

If Russia was really a threat to Europe than the Euros would have been spending a lot more on defense.

The US should have pulled out of NATO after the USSR dissolved.

What is this love affair you have with Russia. What is it about Russia you find so attractive that you’re willing to continue to make un-American posts?

Sheesh. It wasn’t that long ago that the left would celebrate an evil US defense contractor losing a bid. Even more fantastic is now the left (citygator) says LESS US weapons sales to the EU makes the world LESS safe? Thats quite the conclusion from the intellectual class. Welcome to the elastic world of liberal principals. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee
