I said nothing about police spending in my post. Your post is a non sequitor.

You are aware that Mariposa is in a rural area in North Central California roughly 300 miles from Los Angeles. I agree that a very good argument could be made for controlled burns in forested rural areas which would eliminate flammable underbrush reducing the possibility of catastrophic wildfires. That being said it's really not an option in the urbanized areas of Southern California. As far of Prop 1 is concerned there are actually plans to build eight new water project although six are in Northern and Central California and even if they were actually constructed (construction on most wouldn't be completed until after 2030), they wouldn't have had any impact on the state and county ability to fight the wildfires in Los Angeles County.

people get screwed all the time. Have you ever lost money on an investment? Have you ever had a relationship go bad? There is this perception that we live free of problems or consequences for our lives. Hah! Rubbish. And fools are the ones who swallow politicians who promise nirvana.

my point is that STATE FARM was wise enough to see this coming and get the heck out of a bad bet. Hence, their money is safer. Government is playing with OPM and therefore is not so concerned.

    Exactly right on both points.
I love how people chime in on shit they know nothing about because it fits the narrative they've been fed by someone who is either willfully ignorant or purposefully deceptive.
Can't wait for someone to tell us the government is responsible for the incredibly high winds spreading the fires because of the 3400 wind turbines installed at the Tehachapi Pass wind farm along with other similar facilities in SoCal.

I tend to agree although what is a sound business decision on the part of an insurer screws homeowners who need the protection. I'm might also add that one of the reasons that insurance companies have stopped writing new policies and are declining to renew existing homeowner's policies is that as result of climate change a phenomenon which really doesn't exist according to the president-elect there is a sinificantly increased probability of catastrophic losses.

Except it isn't. The budget in LA cut spending on just about everything to dramatically increase police funding. Is this now a bad budgetary decision? How about cutting spending in general? Is that something government's shouldn't do?

So is she back to being qualified? Tough to follow the narratives.

No fire department was going to stop that fire anymore than a fie deparmtne could stop the surge and wind damage from Ian. Can't understand why seemingly intelligent people refuse to recognize the reality and the similarity.

Until the buildings and the infrastructure are built to withstand that level of natural disaster, doesn't amtter if it is fllod storm, or fire, the chit int he way is going to get damaged and nothign or nobody can change that. They are called NATURAL DISASTERS for a reason.

The buildings need to be rebuilt to the new Cali standards just like buildings in Naples, Ft Myers, Tampa, and many other places have had to be rebuilt after hurricanes and can now withstand the natural disaster. Have reserve power for pumping systems needed to keep the tanks full.

Wait, the LA fire chief basically saying more could have been done by the local leaders? That’s complete nonsense. The experts on this board would say otherwise. I’d go with the experts here since they probably have more first hand experience.

she is looking for someone to blame other than her department. throwing the mayor under the bus with the press. the mayor said their differences will be settled in private. there will be a change

local leaders could have had generators at those pumps instead of being dependent on the energy grid to provide power during a fire. a grid known to be shut down during high winds. boneheaded cost saving decision to forego generators at those pumps stations that are critical to providing fire flow in PP.

that has nothing to do with any budget cuts to a bloated fire department

local santa ynez reservoir was closed as cover was under repair. would have provided minor relief. this is thing fire chief was focusing on besides budget cuts. another non-starter as the additional flow would have been insignificant

Reservoir in Pacific Palisades was out of commission when fire started

“If Santa Ynez would have been in service, you probably would have had some help in keeping the pressures up. It wouldn’t have been a panacea. It probably would not have lasted forever,” Adams said.

Adams, who retired about eight months ago, said the reservoir could have preserved some additional water pressure to fight the fires, but that it’s unlikely it would have substantially changed outcomes.

Still, he said, water likely couldn’t flow fast enough to meet firefighters’ incredible demands. “The limiting factor was the pipe,” Adams said, adding that water infrastructure is designed to allow firefighters to extinguish a few houses or a commercial building, not a wildfire. “Systems are designed for a typical city-based fire, not an entire city catching on fire,” he said.

”There’s no domestic water system that’s built to this scale.”

People are starting to wonder if the Democrats wanted a catastrophic fire. Just like they wanted a war in Ukraine.

When I went to UF I read all of the back issues of National Review going back decades. I remember William F Buckley's observation that Jimmy Carter had the Midas touch in reverse. Same for Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass. Both should resign.

Or so it seems. Why was the reservoir above the Palisades empty? Why was Donald Trump sounding the alarm over 2 months ago?

This is what I have been saying. Supply infrastructure isn’t built for 100-year events like bridges, but rather based on peak demand projections.

So, because Trump’s mind does not acknowledge climate change, climate change will get worse? Wow, didn’t know he had so much power.

we, as humans, have entered into areas (Florida, So Cal) that are not hospitable to frame construction… and we continue to do it. You can accept, avoid, mitigate or transfer risk. Insurance contracts (transfer) have been used almost exclusively and now people realize that they should include a portion of the other three ways in dealing with risk because transferring alone is too costly.

Finally, insurance companies have competition. You can read all the time how financial advisors tell you to shop your policies. Go ahead. And, just as you can leave your insurance carrier they too (within terms of contract) can leave you. California REGULATIONS limit what insurance companies can charge…thus, you get shortages because your risk keeps growing but the amount of money you can collect is artificially short changed. The market - like Mother Nature - will not succumb to mere human involvement.

and their peak demand never envisioned half the neighborhood on fire. the design event is the most critical element of any design and must be thoroughly vetted amongst all interested parties.

I have learned to know the power associated with the initials AHJ. That is Authority Having Jurisdiction in the fire codes, ie the local fire chief in most places, and whatever he says is final over even the NFPA because he is the AHJ. No idea if their system is similar but it seems that the NFPA defers to the AHJ in almost everything, and so does the building inspector. You can have all the stamped approved plans in the world that have been reviewed by his very department and it still doesn't matter.

I wonder if the AHJ in PP was a party to the primary factors related to fire protection, like pipe sizes, system capacity, emergency power supply....

i still say none of it matters. unless they caught and contained this thing right away, the stage was set for it to happen with the winds, the dry conditions, and the housing construction materials. much like surfside, the autopsy n this disaster will make an interesting read. state farm saw it coming, doubt they thought it was coming this quick. now uninsured people are calling on state farm to make good on policies paid for over decades and just recently cancelled. apparently lost of people had not secure new insurance. more gentrification in many areas is coming, I'm sure. will just lead to more homelessness as people sell out lots unless they just take the money and leave the state

I bet there are already pools of vulture capital valuing properties and making cash offers as I type this. That is unless Cali has a law to avoid offers within a defined time frame of natural disaster

You position the issue as if it’s sum zero. It’s not. I have not claimed anyone nor any fire department could “stop” the fires. What is obvious is there was plenty more to do to limit the impact. One “tell” is how everyone responsible was immediately back tracking and defensive. No government official could wave her hand and stop the wind. But, they could:
    Have departments staffed appropriately.
Have a two week repair job done before 11 months went by.
Have a goal of minimizing fire damage rather than having the goal of having a diverse department
    Etc. etc. etc.

they have been weighed, they have been measured. And they have been found wanting.
