I was using "DEI" as catchall for various things used to break up patronage / "old boy" networks. If you broke up some small town sheriff's corrupt jobs program for his bros and relatives, they would call it 'DEI' lol. The people getting mad at things like women firefighters dont give a shit about merit, they see "non-white man" and think "not qualified."

The guy arrested for starting fires sure looks like a white supremist to me. You know if he was they would have released his name already. Funny how some things are kept quiet.

I don't necessarily disagree, but wanted to point out the Corporate con that is DEI. The idea was to buy the silence of people like yourself on economic/worker's issues.

One can always count on this poster’s depth, nuance, and relevancy to add to any discussion.

I still feel like there’s a not-insignificant number on this board who think it’s hilarious LA’s burning because it’s a Democrstic stronghold while still claiming to hold Christian values.

Keep in mind that the "net yet POTUS" had previously served as POTUS and that during his first term he tried to politicized the issue and actually withheld disaster assistance to California following similar but far less catastrophic wildfires. There is no reason to believe that he will not try the same stunt a second time. Please tell me how the current POTUS is responsible. Just asking or for that matter how the governor was responsible for extraordinary conditions. Was DeSantis responsible for the destruction that occurred from the hurricanes during his administration? Again just asking.

In case you may have forgotten this happened during Trump's first term:
Trump administration rejects California’s disaster assistance request for wildfires
Trump later relented when it was pointed out the some of those fires occurred in districts represented by Republicans. That may not be the case this time although I do suspect that he may end up relenting again after making the residents of Los Angeles suffer.

We have seen this before and will see it again. Their orange god says something, which by definition make it newsworthy. If someone dares to question or object to what he said, then it is TDS. Rinse and repeat. The true TDS is the blind devotion these rubes give that man. There is literally nothing he could do or say to lose them. not a cult... LOL

….and this sort of behavior is precisely why I’m certain things will get worse.

We see it on these boards, between the poster I called out, a moderator, and other MAGA posters. They’re outright gleeful. Jovial. An unprecedented, potentially multi-century rarity is ravaging one of our largest cities.

It’s a “take that, Demoncrats” petulant attitude that I simply don’t understand. There’s even an unwillingness to empirically look at root causes that keep causing more “unprecedented” weather.

    • More major hurricanes, maintaining their strength over land.
    • Increasingly unpredictable precipitation patterns.
    • Absurdly longer and wetter monsoons in India/Bangladesh, leading to mass migrations.
    • Heating in Central and South America doing real damage to agriculture and workers.
    • Droughts in the western and central United States.
    • Significantly reduction in spring meltwater from once-sustainable glacier and other snowmelt.
    • Increasingly erratic behavior of weather in Europe, tied to weakening of the AMOC. You think the droughts here are bad? Go to southern Spain, near Barcelona.

It’s not that I like what the data is showing us. I’m a gearhead. I love getting my hands covered in grease and oil to make my cars go faster. It’s why I became an engineer. My personal joy doesn’t override hard science, though.

When I saw the pain and suffering in Georgia, North Carolina, and other areas, it broke my heart. It didn’t matter how they voted or how their EC would vote. They were fellow Americans. Human beings. What did make me mad was the MAGA movement weaponizing that disaster to spread falsehoods which lead to threats against FEMA personnel or people outright refusing help.

I don’t know what the solution is at this point. Denying help because people didn’t vote for a candidate would have been disqualifying even a decade ago. Now, a sufficient number of fellow Americans have been so poisoned and radicalized to hate that anyone outside of their movement that they think they aren’t even Real Americans. They’re the enemy. Watching them hurt and finding schadenfreude (at best) is almost a prerequisite for membership in the MAGA club.

    *******A correction and apology******
Up thread I named a man I thought had been arrested for the recent fires in the Palisade area, only to learn that person had been charged with arson in Palisade area fires in May of 2021. I failed to note the date on the news article about the previous fires in 2021.

It's disheartening to say the least to witness people happy that a natural disaster has hit in an area where most residents are on the other end of the political spectrum. Disgusting is probably a better word.

And there will be plenty of time when the disaster is over to point fingers and place blame. Today, there are people, like my sister-in-law's parents who escaped with a suitcase containing whatever clothes they could throw into it and their prescription medications. That's it! And they are lucky to be safe, as at least 10 people so far didn't make it out!

The focus today should be safety for all the residents and support for the incredibly brave first responders doing all they can. No politics should be discussed. It solves nothing and doesn't help any of those in need today. Today, they need donations and empathy for losing everything but their lives. Plus a promise to help them rebuild in the future. And it doesn't matter if it's Malibu, CA, or Ashville, NC, the sentiment should be exactly the same.

Homeless, on probation. Residents detained him as they said he was about to start a fire with a propane torch.

Arrested on probation charge, no Arson as of yet.

Haven’t a number of church burnings over the years been caused by crazy homeless?

Back when I owned the 4 Firehouse Subs locations I also owned a working firetruck that held 1200 gallons of water. One of my really good friends owned a house in the rural woods of SW Volusia County. Wild fires were in his area so I loaded it up with water and drove it to his house. My son who is a firefighter showed me how to hook everything up and use it to fight a fire- He had about 20 acres of woods behind his home. I wheeled that sucker into his back yard and hooked it up and was ready if the flames go to close but the closest they came was about half a mile. It is hard for me to beleive that LA County Fire and Rescue did not have these types of trucks

I am hardly gleeful that LA is burning. A lot of people lost everything they had. I agree with Trump in had the LA Mayor and the cally guvner acted, maybe it could have been prevented or atleast been less devastating.

The penalties for arson need to be increased exponentially. You start a fire like this, you are DONE. Throw away the key and that is being merciful as I'm sure some would like to put them down like the sick dogs they are.

Doubtful, given the conditions. Three things effect the severity of a wildfire. Temperatures, humidity, and wind speed. All three were against this fire being containable and controllable.

Maybe there were things that could've been done years ago. But that blame isn't on the current Mayor and Governor. It goes k back decades of fire suppression instead of potentially letting smaller fires in the area burn. Maybe updating older homes up to current code would have helped too, but that's not cheap. But once the fire started? It was going to be a disaster.

The fires happened and devastated thousands of homes. Not sure anything could have been done just like not much can be done to turn a hurricane or a tornado out of the path of people's houses.
What can be done is strengthen building codes and development rules for natural disaster-prone areas.
Although for tornadoes, there isn't much you can do other than a concrete building with windows no bigger than 6" by 6" to meet ICC 500.
Blaming this person or that agency does nothing at this point. Learn from it like Andrew and improve what you can and move on.

houses flooded and blown away by Andrew/Irma ..whose fault?

system isn't designed to withstand dante's inferno..is there really blame to be had anymore than the homes that ahve been blown away and wiped out by surge from hurricanes. we all knew that one day it would happen but we didn't rebuild everything in advance.

sux that the reality it doesn't fit your narrative..carry on
