Mass layoffs now paused at US nuclear weapons agency

Managers with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) are frantically calling employees back and telling them that -- as of right now -- they're not fired, despite some receiving termination emails and phone calls on Thursday. Their badges are getting turned back on and access to federal systems is being restored, at least temporarily.

Hundreds of probationary employees were terminated Thursday night in the mass Trump administration layoffs. The move prompted concerns of a national security risk because the agency is responsible for maintaining U.S. nuclear weapons, transporting them, and nuclear counterterrorism, among other missions.

NNSA held an all-staff meeting Friday morning, announcing the DOE had agreed to pause the layoffs, due to the agency's national security mission.

NNSA staff tell ABC News they are in a holding pattern. They're still bracing for firings, but possibly not as widespread.

We won't know the true impact of all these firings for years, I can guarantee it won't be positive. Even in this situation I'm sure not everyone will choose to return to work

I would agree! Do I think there’s waste in our government that we could improve upon, sure! Just like every single corporation out there today. However, the cuts we’re making and the damage being done is going to be felt by this country for many years to come.

I work for a very large company and maybe 10 years ago we went through a VRO (voluntary retirement option) process to help reduce costs. While we were able to save money by essentially buying out more expensive and tenured associates we still have a knowledge and experience gap in many areas to this day due to the history and just tribal knowledge that was lost from those experienced associates. Sometimes things look really great on paper, but don’t always work the way you think they will.

Trump officials fired nuclear staff not realizing they oversee the country’s weapons stockpile, sources

Sources told CNN the officials did not seem to know this agency oversees America’s nuclear weapons.

“Congress is freaking out because it appears DOE didn’t really realize NNSA oversees the nuclear stockpile,” one source said. “The nuclear deterrent is the backbone of American security and stability – period. For there to be any even very small holes poked even in the maintenance of that deterrent should be extremely frightening to people.”

I can't wait till they get to the DoD. Over half the $800B budget goes to contractors, and most of the other half is spent on hard assets like bases, buildings and maintenance. Very little $ will be saved by firing civilians like myself. I've saved the tax payer more $ than I will ever be paid in my lifetime and retirement just in contract negotiations. What they are doing up there is beyond stupid and will have major consequences to all of us for generations.

Everyone in the DoD and DoE knows that the DoE leads the nuclear arsenal. That's why it's beyond stupid to cut funding without knowing what it is or does.

MAGAs will spin it, like always. On a side note, I think it’s sad/pathetic/hilarious that MAGA can’t even say anything slightly negative about Elon or Trump, but they know they’ll eventually have to cause blasphemy and say something bad (truthful) about one of them lol

I’m supportive of this. Nuclear weapons pretty much manage themselves these days.

Also, Elon knows rockets so he should have sole discretion of when we attach a nuclear warhead to one, right?

Every one of those workers should band together and tell them no, they are not coming back unless:
    1. they get immediate 25% pay raises
    2. President Musk is immediately thrown out of the White House and investigated over passing classified information to our enemies.

Otherwise, let President Musk and his Meat Puppet Moron side-kick go pick up a weapon and guard that mess.
