This right here is why this team may end up losing even the ones it’s supposed to win. This team is better than State on paper, but as we all know, too many variables exist that can affect the outcome.
It has to be very difficult for the current players, every talking head in sports and the world knows Napier will be fired that's why as soon as the 4 games are up, he'll be let go, which you have to assume will be after ucf game. but if some how he manages to lose this weekend, you can't wait any longer -- he has to be let go immediately after the game. I'm talking maybe when the whistle blows -- get this guy away from our program ASAP.
With a loss this weekend no doubt. But I think it is likely he is gone on Sunday/Monday no matter what. We have the BYE week next week so that would give admins time to get the interim setup and the team to at least have some structure going into the UCF game. There is a chance if we blow out Miss St this weekend, maybe the admins sit on their hands... but I doubt it.
Then he brings his staff and any o lineman from ole Miss that he still wants with him anyways. Maybe a WR or two. Then we trot out a super young defense next year and he brings in a ton of defensive transfers in the next offseason so even it out. it can def work
Why? What are you hoping to accomplish by firing him 4 weeks in? If the players have quit then let Billy deal with it. These are his players afterall. Who has won anything with an interim coach? The season is lost, there is no reason to give our rivals a shot to legally raid our players. Fire him at the end of the season and hire a new coach to salvage what they can. I don't understand the shoot yourself in the foot mentality just because we are mad that we are losing.
I don’t doubt the talent we have. What I expect is that much of that talent along with high profile recruits will probably leave, and if we hire kiffin it likely won’t be until after esd. Other coaching options might announce earlier and start recruiting immediately, but lane is good with the portal.
That's debatable- I mean Mouse Holloway with his 14 nattys and plethora of future Olympic gold medalists makes a pretty strong case. And I say that as a huge Billy D and Spurrier fan. But that's really NOT the point. The point is that the process that hired Billy D, and Mike Holloway HAS NOT WORKED FOR FLORIDA FOOTBALL. For whatever reason, the process that identifies a young up and comer in a small school has failed here. since I started UF in 83 I would rank our football coaches as... Spurrier Meyer Pell Mullen Hall Zook Muschamp Mac Billy N This is debatable, but what do the top 4 have in common? All had big school experience or extensive Florida experience. The lower 4 had zero head coaching experience at any big school. (Hall was a unique case.) So IMO again- the Billy D PROCESS does not work for football. It may for basketball or another sport. IMO we need SEC or other big school experience.
From recent memory, both Auburn and GT found a spark from midseason firings and interims and there was genuine pride and enthusiasm back in the players, program, and fans. No guarantees and plenty of counter examples, but it absolutely can happen.
That's why CBN hasn't been fired yet. There's no benefit to doing it right now and the down fall would be kids could just take their red shirt , declare they are transferring, sit out the rest of the year and with 9 games left we wouldn't be able to field a team.
That would be bad if it's true. Man. But, why would he like a tweet saying Napier needs to go if he's quitting for the year and leaving anyway?
Meyer is a little bit of an outlier, but he had Bowling Green and Utah rocking, so he had history of 2 successful programs. I think the UF ties are important, which is what got Spurrier hired. I think we need to look at a coordinator from a big school, or Lane. I dont like the "up and comer" who is a HC already. I like the idea of a young OC or DC from a top 20 P4 team, or a HC with a good track record at a large school.
Not saying it will be quick turn around. But you are wrong if you think we would be doomed. The portal works both ways. If you hire a coach who attracts players (Lane), the portal gives you a chance to bring in guys who can play immediately. The NIL money does not leave when the players leave. There are guys out there who can play, who really only care about exposure and money.
all i know is this -- I'll never forget 2004 - I think we had already lost to LSU and Tenn and zook's seat was getting hotter and Utah was playing UNC. Zook had just yelled at the frat and was a ticking time bomb. I watched that Utah/heels game and was blown away by utah. utah's offense was as explosive as we had ever seen. Alex Smith ran the spread with perfection -- it was obvious that Urban was the real deal.
Nope, not saying we are doomed. But, don't expect to be a consistent competitor for at least 4-5 years. Check back with me on that.
Depends on how we define consistent. But I agree, I think it will take time to have proven stability. But that is a given for any HC. I think it takes 3-4 Years just to figure out it its fools gold or not. Which is what scares me with Lane. He has won games, but has not had that 2-3 year in a row sustained success. He has a chance this year at Ole Miss, and it appears they will compete in the CFP, but the way his teams are built Ole miss would likely fall off next year. Just depends on where Florida wants their floor and ceiling to be. Are we ok with 7/8 win seasons every 3rd/4th year if we have a 11/12 win season mixed in between them?
