The portal store is not exactly stocked to the rim with the good stuff where you just go in and grab what ever you need. Every quality portal player reports to have been contacted by 15-20+ P5 programs. There’s so much competition for the high quality players, most better than UF. Every program has an army now too. Everyone is shopping for better players to plug in, including the upper tier teams. Other than Graham Mertz, who else did the UF army strike portal gold with in the last cycle? I just don’t see the portal saving the 24 season.
Probably not, but its no different than HS recruiting except its a smaller pond with just as much competition.
We're not getting 15 quality experienced players to get to 10 wins next year like a few are clamoring for. And if you could it wouldn't be sustainable. Just a handful we hope can help.
I’m hoping for 3-5 starters. 5 would be outstanding and possibly give us a fighting chance at 8 wins if they are good players….. a fighting chance.
Cam Jackson was a big addition… and Banks was decent. I think Goodwin would have been a huge upgrade, if it would’ve worked out. But I get what you’re saying. We definitely need some “right now” one year rental guys. Not layering in depth pieces.
Just an handful of real contributors could be the difference between a winning or break-even and a losing season. Napier needs a winning season in the worst way. If we got 1 player at each of the following positions: CB, DE, LB, OT, and WR that is an upgrade, things could begin to look up.
I forgot about Cam Jackson, as big as he is, how could I, he was a good get for sure. Banks was just okay, hopefully going forward he develops nicely. Getting quality portal additions is just not that easy though, not like some think.
I tend to agree with you however that doesn't explain how a once slumping fsu hit pay dirt with the portal. They were on the ropes and yet did extremely well.
Year 2: Graham Mertz, Cam Jackson, Caleb Banks (who played OVER McClellan and Dez), George, Mazzccua all came in as starters. KGoodwin possibly projected to start and Carroll was going to be in the rotation much to RB2s mom's ire. Nunnary was a decent special teams/depth player. Mitchell started and was a great fit character-wise but struggled as an everydown LB. Thats 9 starters/contributors. Year 1: Pearsall, Montrell, O'Cyrus, Kimber, Waites. 3 were top players on the roster. The other also 2 started games. Its revisionist history to think that UF hasn't added from the portal. Half the starters and most of the best players came from the portal. So now all the sudden UF fans are worried we aren't moving too fast. Just let the coach do his work and quit blabbering. Hopefully he hits on some high-quality ones that turn out and help our core really talented 30 FR/SO to bridge the gap for 24.
I haven’t seen anybody asking for 15 but 6 to 7 is very reasonable. When I say 6 to 7, I’m talking with at least three or four at starter level.
you’re not wrong about anything you said, but I would venture to say this year is much more important than year one and year two and we need to start grabbing kids now and not wait for the spring.
They hit pay dirt in the portal machine because they went all in to land quality in quantity, imho. It’s clearly a much different philosophy than what’s being processed here. Some believe it’s not sustainable. I’m not so sure about that, but we shall see, the proof is in the pudding. I think you have to bring in a handful of high quality portal dudes every year now, especially when 2 of your best players bolt to other teams.
They had no choice given their recruiting. Probably committed to spending and tampering as priority number 1 over recruiting.
