We ate at an In and Out in Salt Lake City. Just seemed like another fast food place to me. Sorry, it made me laugh when you used quality and top notch when describing it. :D

Ten years I've been living on the left coast where In & Out are all over and every one of them seems to have long drive-in lines regardless of the time of day. Wife & I might have eaten there about a half dozen times at best because we've yet to figure out why it's so popular.

How do you define a state’s success? California leads in almost every important stat.

Sorry the first part should have been nobody thinks high wages in general aren’t good. I didn’t double check before I posted.

I’ll stand by the suggestion that $20/hr wages for fast food workers is debatable.

    I had a typo.
Should have said nobody thinks higher wages in general aren’t good.

It was in response to the claim the GOP wants low wages.
    Hope that clears it up.

It's the consistency of In and Out. It's not the best burger I've ever had, but for fast food, you get a quality, 100% beef burger every time. Never frozen, and high quality. The fries and shakes are also fresh and high quality. Can't really say McD or BK has anywhere near the consistency and quality of In and Out.

As I said, I don't doubt that some in the industry did it, just saying that costs should only be used as a pricing tool in situations with near perfect competition. If a company can differentiate at all, then they should price based on market willingness-to-pay/customer value not based on costs. Costs should only act as a lower bound in pricing. If fast food companies are doing that now (and I never really dug into that industry much), they are doing no favors to their partners or shareholders.

High home prices are signs of success, not failure.

By your metric, the large states will always be the most successful. I define success based on more than one factor, particularly when it comes to California, Texas, NY, and Florida.

Other factors to consider are growth, future industrial base, economic incentives, taxes, agriculture, cost of living vs median wage or salary, and quality of primary education. Feel free to add others.

In many of those California is probably significantly lower than many other states. Not many companies are running to California to build factories or corporate offices, and Silicon Valley will most likely canibalize itself with remote work and out sourcing.

We have closed almost half of our facilities there over the last 20 years. The next 10 will be more. Thrifty years ago when we were moving work out of California we could expect 20-30% transfers. This next round we are expecting around 50%.

I would encourage those who think that the state is successful to take a two week vacation there. Other than driving up or down the coast for a few hundred miles you will be ready to head home early.

Some peep sure do like to bash a place that subsidizes a lot of other places and is a huge economic engine (CA). You do realize that CA pays more into the fed than it gets back, unlike places like KY, MS, etc etc. ??
Also it is not populated exclusively by a bunch of lefty libbie commies who hate America. A lot of conservatives live in CA. But bash away anyway if that floats your boat.
