Analytics may help next year with the roster, but he'll need to get adept at bringing in the Jimmy's & Joe's if we want to win any conference titles.
I had seen his name on some lists as a possible hire at UF. But…I’m not excited about the hire. Regardless, I hope he succeeds and gator hoops dominates in the near future. I am a fan of analytics but not a fan of the money ball talk- that was because a team needed to do more with less $ and resources- that is not the case at a place like UF. I also hope he retains Pastrana.
I do love hearing we got a guy huge on analytics. White was a disaster at that type of thinking (and most college basketball lags behind the pros in this). That being said, analytics is less important than raw talent (recruiting) and X’s and O’s. So hopefully he gets the job done in those areas too. I don’t think White is leaving him much to start with, so finding talent in year 1 and 2 will be a major job.
Wouldn't mind Pastrana sticking around either. Thinking back on this a bit, I think the writing was on the wall for White last sumemer when he failed to "recruit" an experienced, seasoned assistant coach, and we instead hired Akeem Miskdeen.
Definitely not a household name in college hoops, but I like what I'm reading about him and he has my full support right now. Moneyball is real, I'm hoping he can make it work here.
Not sure if being a recruiter under Pearl is good or not. I did see that he has a history in sales so that's a plus for recruiting. Analytics are nice, but need players to execute them. Can't wait to see the fans reaction to the late game fouling up 2.
I'll count myself as cautiously optimistic. But it's ultimately going to come down to recruiting. For all the complaints about White's in-game coaching, the ultimate issue proved to be that our teams just didn't have a level of talent that was adequate to the task of winning the SEC and going deep into the tournament. The analytics are awesome, and I'm genuinely thrilled Golden is such a creative thinker, but eventually it's going to come down to the caliber of player we put on the court.
Of course! Todd. Duh. What was I thinking? In all seriousness, Strickland had better be right on this. I will renew my tix but I’m concerned.
Young Good basketball mind Energetic Up tempo style with lots of screens not the stagnant never moving in the half court crap we’ve seen for years Bruce pearl tree Checks all the boxes for me
Welcome to the era of Nerdball! You know what they say, revenge is a dish that is best served cold. Welcome aboard!
I think it is a mix of talent and scheme. In my opinion, White’s scheme needed a certain type and level of talent for it to work, and he didn’t have/recruit that level of talent for much of his time here. A coach that uses a scheme that fits his players and who also recruits and develops players that fit said scheme can still do very well. Billy’s 2013-2014 team wasn’t filled with the most talented individuals, but they went 36-3 (18-0) because they played as a team in a scheme that fit them. I don’t think White’s scheme didn’t do his players any favors.
Timing is pretty interesting. It's our AD's job to be aware and ready if he needs to hire a replacement for any sport, but to have the deal done like 12 hours after SF exits the tourney...and to have Coach White take the uga job reportedly like 5 hours after he was contacted...all sounds fishy. In your opinion, has this been in the works for a while or did it all really happen that fast?
Todd was an assistant under Bruce at Auburn before moving up the coaching ladder. Everyone at Auburn thought Todd was a rising star from early on. Bruce thinks very very highly of Todd. Great hire by UF IMO.
