Never heard of him before today but liking what I'm reading Gators hire 'rising star' in Todd Golden, 36, whose analytics-driven success has impressed in NCAA (and NBA) circles
Crazy me. I swear I heard Stoops’ wife was spotted with a realtor in Gainesville this week. “Wes Chandler was Percy Harvin before Percy Harvin was born.”
I had never heard of the guy before but I’m excited for the hire. The thing I’m most excited about is that he isn’t scared to foul with the lead to make sure that we have the ball at the end of the game.
Me too, but I knew that was a fantasy. I'll add more later after I finish reading the thread. I have reason for optimism but also concerns too (not necessarily with Golden, but more about how our program is perceived and our administration.)
This is a very good pull quote (and I have not been a fan of Stricklin's early tenure- so this is high praise from me for him). But after watching multiple coaches in football with issues with emotional intelligence, I am very happy that is being prioritized in hiring.
I am 100% in the same boat. I’ve been fairly critical of Stricklin, but have to say I love the approach with this hire. Really appreciate the things he was looking for.
Means a lot @tilly lol. As a Lafayette County kid, I am a HUGE fan…. But I also know the history on this board.
Been traveling all day, and just catching up, so apologies if this has been said. I think this quick hire tells us that Mike and Scott already new this was coming and this has been in the works.
I was fortunate to stay up late and watch last night's Murray State/San Fran game. I was watching more to see McMahon, as opposed to Golden. However, both coaches impressed me. I absolutely enjoyed watching San Fran stay in that game and make that comeback. I loved the way they played and wished we had played with that same energy for most of the last 7 years or so. So when I saw my twitter feed fill up with Todd Golden, I was like wow, that's pretty wild. Who would have thought? Here's what I like. I know Pearl rubs many here the wrong way, but I've always been impressed with the job he has done, no matter where he has been. That's a plus. I like the analytics to. I have felt that White has made a lot of bad in game coaching decisions. The fact that Golden uses a fact, data driven approach is an automatic upgrade. I can hope that we won't be fouling bad three point shooters with 2 seconds left on the shot clock ever again. Here's my concerns. Recruiting is our biggest problem. We're in a world of hurt here with the NIL. I don't think our recruiting problems are going away just because we hired another relatively unknown coach. Somehow that has to change and this will be his biggest challenge. But the biggest issue to me is how far the perception of this program has fallen. There seems to have been no attempt made to find a proven coach that has some star power. Is that because no one was interested or the UAA refuses to pony up for that coach? Either way, that tells you how important they view the program. This is disturbing and confirms the feelings I have had now for quite a few years. This hire will not excite the fan base or move the needle at all. He'll have to win quickly and prove that his approach works. I have some confidence in him, but this will be a challenge.
I'm saying it here first so as to get credit when someone else tries to rename the O. Dome the Corral.
Since USF beat Samford by 22 and held them to 55 total points I'm not sure they cared too much about his 24 points.
