Yeah, this is an example of creating a statistic to show what you want it to show.

When your average person talks about “mass shootings,” they’re referring to seemingly random acts of violence in public places. They don’t mean a guy killing his wife and kids at home, or someone robbing a drug dealer and shooting the folks in the house.

Because that’s what basically any rifle bullet does, it’s nothing special about AR-15s.

The “look how devastating .223 is, it’s so much worse than 9mm” narrative is preying on people who don’t understand that the way rifle and pistol (or at least non-magnum pistol) rounds work are fundamentally different. Pistol bullets used for self-defense tend to be bullets designed for significant expansion to effectively dump the much more limited energy they carry and increase the permanent wound channel. Rifle bullets have hugely more energy, and as a result tend to rely more on hydrostatic shock and temporary wound channels to cause their damage.

Interesting take. I wonder why my primary assigned weapon in combat is an M4(AR-15) and my sidearm is a 9mm. They are both the same according to you, right? Let's stop being silly. An AR-15 rifle and a 9mm pistol are not comparable. I've shot and carried both.

If that’s what you took from what I said, I’m not sure what to tell you.

The entire post was an explanation of how rifles and pistols don’t work the same way, and you somehow interpreted that as “they’re the same.”

My whole point was that obviously a rifle causes more damage than a pistol. That’s going to be true of nearly any rifle and pistol you happen to pick, unless the rifle is a .22 or the pistol is one of the super magnums.

Yeah, what a bunch of horse shit. Because guy killing wife/kids or clerks getting killed don't matter. Defend, deflect away. YAY GUNS!

Male or female, they looked like a pretty small person. I'm wondering how they were able to tote around two assault rifles (cue the gun brigade to correct me on what an assault rifle is).

It's because you started out with saying there is nothing special about the AR-15, and you were responding to someone who said they didn't understand why anyone needs to own these guns. You were all over the place.

Because it’s the same “look how devastating AR-15 bullets are” article that gets trotted out every time and says “how devastating” they are by comparing them to FMJ handgun rounds rather than other rifle bullets.

Unless your position is that no one should ever own any rifle (ironically the exact opposite of the gun control movement’s position until the mid-90s, when they were focused on handguns as the guns actually used in most crimes), that “look how devastating, no one needs this” position is based on a comparison so misleading as to be completely meaningless.

I can see this is a pet peeve of yours. Mine is children getting murdered by assault style rifles.

It is the magazine capacity. The .223 was a varmint round. Crazy accurate, easy to shoot and easy to carry a bunch of ammo. As far as rifle rounds, it is anemic. Doesn’t change its lethality in these situations. Or that it seems to empower people with esteem issues.
It is also true that trying to brand everything as a “mass shooting” to skew the numbers also causes push back against a false narrative. The same could be said of using suicide data as gun violence.
In order to have a conversation, we have to put aside all the bs.

I’m a 36 year old father to 4 and 2 year old girls. I drop and pick up my kids everyday to school. I cried my eyes out again today. When is this going to stop?

Yeah no one should have a 30-6 either. The reason gun nuts prefer the AR 15 is that it’s easier to shoot people in mass quantities.

You are missing the point. AR-15 rounds are devastating because they are themselves... devastating. Comparing them to handguns is irrelevant. And no, I don't think the mid-90's gun control position is appropriate anymore because society and gun violence has changed. Why should we control guns the same way today as we did before the epidemic of school and mass shootings? Make it make sense.

Lots of discussion about this on my Facebook friends feed. Any talk about gun reform, not all out banning, is met with the usual fear mongering about communism, being "outgunned", freedom etc etc

So much fear about not having an AR in a gunfight at one's household.....

Most pussified scared demographic in the world these gun nuts are...

.123 is nothing special. Far weaker and less powerful than the .308, 30-06, 7mm and many many others
A river 10/22 can be made to look like an assault style weapon. We are talking “style” here. Any semi auto gun can be an assault style weapon.
Bolt action .308 is often used by police as a sniper rifle. Guess my wife’s hunting rifle is now an assault style weapon
Our president goes out in public and discusses how a 9mm can blow a persons lungs out of their chest… not his first gun snafu to say the least.

Bolt action doesn’t work, very well in mass shootings. It’s why no one has used one since the 60’s at UT.
