Columbia getting tough ….. well tough for a bunch of liberal academics. MSN Columbia University has distributed a letter to members of the encampment on campus telling them to gather their belongings and leave the area by 2 p.m., saying if they identify themselves and sign a form "to abide by all University policies through June 30, 2025, or the date of the conferral of your degree, whichever is earlier, you will be eligible to complete the semester in good standing." The school said it has "already identified many students in the encampment" and "if you do not identify yourself upon leaving and sign the form now, you will not be eligible to sign and complete the semester in good standing." The school warned it could take action up to suspension or expulsion if they do not leave the encampment. The school reiterated that negotiations with protesters had broken down and said the protests are a "disruption" to those taking final exams and preparing for graduation. "As you are probably aware, the dialogue between the University and student leaders of the encampment is, regrettably, at an impasse," the letter states. "The current unauthorized encampment and disruption on Columbia University’s campus is creating an unwelcoming environment for members of our community. External actors have also contributed to this environment, especially around our gates, causing safety concerns – including for our neighbors."
Calling Columbia's admin's actions like "heavy-handed fascists" is an embarrassment to heavy-handed fascists everywhere. From the "How Heavy a Hand?" Fascist playbook, i.e. my bible. Heavy-handed fascists: all protestors gone - some with cracked skulls, people dragged away and never heard from again. Regularly-handed fascists: all protestors gone - some with bumps and bruises, tents and all personal items removed and never seen again. Weak-handed fascists: protestors mostly gone - some outliers still causing mayhem. Fascists never to be seen again. Columbia admin: negotiate with protestors, line in the sand drawn...and drawn again. Talk some more. Extend deadline.
The fact that they were in “negotiations” says it all. What were they negotiating? The school sets policy and the students are obligated to follow it or face corrective action. If the protestors don’t like it, there are about 3 million kids each year that would gladly take their spot at an Ivy. You’re the admin, act like it.
Uh, they already set off a national wave of solidarity protests and encampments by taking the 'zero tolerance' track. I suppose they could always double down. Not sure admins around the country are hoping they do. I mean, its basically May. They literally could have just waited it out from the get go until graduation and people leave for the summer/permanently.
The protests nationwide had zero to do with Columbia’s actions to clear them, in fact it’s the opposite, had Columbia and Yale in particular had acted rationally sooner this would not even be a story. They let it get to the point where kids felt entitled to basically claim parts of campus and completely disrupt campus life as they saw fit, became national news and got sympathetic coverage. Every would be protestor in the country saw that.
Well considering they sprung up everywhere after news of Columbia's initial crackdown, arrests and suspension of students I'm not sure you can say that's true.
University administrators are largely unprincipled careerists who fear their donors and jobs. Weenies like Ben Sasse are a dime a dozen in academia.
Hard disagree. Columbia sending in the cops made this national news. It is a direct cause of it blowing up the way it did.
The protests had already been making national news for days before that. In fact it was that national pressure that got them to finally crack down…other protests had already sprung up. It’s not a coincidence that almost every protest was set up almost identical to the ivies. They saw weakness and what worked on getting attention, and pounced on it. I’m sure that some had sympathy with those arrested and joined for that, but if you are a college student who can bring your school to its knees and get national press by setting up a tent, of course it’s a no brainer.
If you think Columbia's response was weak, I seriously worry what your idea of not demonstrating weakness is. Firehoses, dogs? Bull Connor cracking some skulls?
Seems to me what’s unique about these Palestine college campus protests is not the protests themselves but the reaction to them. Some very powerful folks trying to silence these students and the students are having none of it. Like oxygen to a flame.
Universities are very important for the military industrial complex (or whatever you want to call it), of all the campus protests since the 60s, its the anti-war ones which always get the most brutal response. Definitely a nexus between the state and universities, and for the most part the post-WWII American state is war/defense oriented.
It's the natural devolvement when you cannot define a woman, men can have babies and everyone is entitled to their own truth. What does it mean to behave appropriately? I would gather as a Hamashole behaving appropriately would be killing Jews; so, without any agreement on appropriate behavior we can all do anything we want.
I don’t know what the background here was, he may have grabbed a sign. But doesn’t give her the right to taser him as he’s walking away.
I did not see anyone tasered or act like they had been tasered. I saw her display it and threaten him with it.
She's in the wrong. But I'm not going to play the game where people try to define entire groups by one person's bad behavior. Tense moment involving taser at UCLA amid encampment, protest
