Not a true statement at all. What’s this “every year” crap. May have heard some of it last year, but you damn sure didn’t hear it the year before that - it was his first year. Come on man
They were 47% (15 of 32) on 4th down in year 1....that's actually pretty good IMO, considering many of the "misses" were no choice/desperation attempts when trailing. I'll bet the conversion % when they had the "option" to kick was likely over 75%
It's APRIL, five months before we play scUM. We have a Spring game approaching. Maybe we see some new character in our offense- and defense- and then have some months for the staff to continue to build something. But the man is anything but a gambler. To say that is odd. His poker style would be tight/passive. Excessive curl routes and RBs entirely out of a play, waiting for a pass 5 yards behind the LOS are incredibly conservative, and the non stop jet motion for nothing was torture. Lets just hope he lets his CO OCs offensive coordinate so that he can be aware of what's transpiring in games, and manage situations.
I am hearing that Russ Calloway may have more responsibility with playcalling. A former qb at Valdosta State, perhaps he is able to take on the mantle and have success. I am not saying he is assuming the responsibility of offensive coordinator, but it appears he may be taking on more responsibility. It may be a shared responsibility, as BN apparently wants to remain involved or maybe in control. This is very fluid, so we will see where this goes.
For trick plays to work, the eleven guys on the field and the coaches need to be clicking on all cylinders for at least the good part of the game. This item was lacking last season.
To a large degree, you are correct. He reminds me of Muschamp--manage the game, and play not to lose. To say, though, " he is anything but a gambler," is not quite accurate either. At the same time, nor does his mantra, "Scared money don't make money," describe his approach. I want to see BN take smart risks. To tell Mertz to begin taking calculated risks is a start. When the DL is not putting pressure on the quarterback, do some blitzing. Play the game with urgency! I despise safe wins, as that seems to indicate you are just sitting on a small lead.
Would like to see Napier all but out of the equation. Sale is not an OC. He can't even recruit. He should have been commanded to coach up the OL and land some top prospects. But that's another story. Hopefully Callaway will make a significant difference.
A person can say all sorts of things to sound great in an interview and at introductory press conferences. He's done nothing to personify that statement. It's not a mantra and not his personality. I've watched his 3/23/2024 presser and he sounds like a BS artist, frankly- talks a lot, says nothing. I would have liked him to say more directly, "we made some mistakes last season in several key areas and that's not going to happen again." Weird dude that's been "removed" from his position as OC for being mediocre and limited in his vision. Don't get me wrong, if he wins and the Gators win, I'm good.
A leaky Oline and a turrible defense might have something to do with conservatism. Also a new QB with history of interceptions.
Our o/u is same as last year at 5.5. I said the over 5.5 last year was a bad bet since I had us 6-6. This year I would put some money on the over. We are clearing that.
It is time to be aggressive. All great offenses and defensives are aggressive, 100% of the time, it is a mind set. Let's Go!!
If we had to play safe, conservative, lower scoring offense due to weaknesses that the staff is responsible for, what can we say about that? If Mertz is the QB you referenced, remember that Napier really wanted him, so? While your points are well taken and have merit, Napier's scheme and tendencies last season weren't a departure from the offenses he had at other stops. I'm hoping Callaway is the answer because I doubt it's Sale or Napier. OTOH, it's possible that our Defense is so much better that the same offensive production plus the staff managing games like organized professionals, could be all we need to improve wins/losses dramatically. Thinking about hoops and UConn and how they don't have to score so many points because their defense just smothers opponents.
Hard to say how good Mertz can be with protection- talking about accuracy and length of downfield passes. Calloway could be the man if Napier lets it happen. OL performance is so critical to anything beyond last year's conservative system moving the ball more consistently. Hopefully Napier is open to removing aspects of his system that are sub optimal.
