It eliminates a lot of the thinking that is required from a zone defense as the DB always knows what his responsiblity is in man coverage.

Just find another Reggie Nelson to lock down the back half of the field and play cover 1. Easy peasy. Of course there was only one RFN and he would be suspended more than half the season if he played in today's rules.

But seriously, we still have to learn how to play zone at times although I'd agree man press/cover needs to be what we run more often than not.

Totally agree with you and really liked the pressure we got in the second half from the line. Wish would have gotten to Bennett more and crushed him..... The pressure causes timing issues as well as the man press coverage does also. I know people will say well you can get beat on the outside a lot easier that way. But, we are getting beat now in the passive/prevent we are in. At least it caused some int's when we played press. I'm all for more of it.

Yes, we need more than one pass defense, but as young as this secondary is, it's probably best to use what they are experienced in and add onto that with time. It's a lot easier to become confused about where and what you are supposed to do in a zone, since there are more reads to make. All it takes is for one player to make the wrong read and the entire secondary is screwed, and since we don't have RFN to make up for the mistakes of others, we're relying on players that don't have the skill of Reggie and we continually see the results of that.

Yes, but finding one thing good and sticking to it would likely result in a vast improvement from what we've seen this year.

Yes, the best defenses with the highest ceilings can probably throw more at offenses. But we don't need a high ceiling defense right now, an adequate one would be a dramatic improvement.

Don't get me wrong. I'd much rather play majority man and suffer a blown play here and there than play zone, still give up blown plays but also giving up 3rd down over and over and never getting off the field anyway.

We are both thinking the same thing and wondering about the same people. Our excuse has been, we do not have the talent and coaches know best.

100% it was how Auburn slowed down LSU in 2019, Sadly we didn't follow that blueprint. Not having Grenard and Zungia at full strength did help either that game.
Receivers are faster yes but the DBs are as well, no?

True, they are faster as well, but the WRs know where they're going so that's a distinct advantage. I think not having a strong pass rush is killing us as much as anything, as you noted that Grenard and Zuniga not being available attests to.

Yeah, learning a little about a lot of things is a sure way to failure instead of mastering one thing and utilizing it for success. I know how to play golf, but never mastered any aspect of it to be more than someone that loses a golfball everytime there's water nearby. Knowing a little about a wide variety of things means you can have a conversation on a lot of topics, but never at a deeper level, and combined with a few bucks can buy you a cup of coffee.

I agree... Bend-But-Don't-Break is NOT a defensive scheme, it's an excuse for letting teams run all up and down the field on us.

It's without a doubt the best our DBs have played all year! Did we give up a third and long?

One is a humiliatingly slow death that eventually destroys moral... and fan support. But our rivals absolutely adore it. :)

I'm not going to lie, watching that clip from the OP gave me shades of the Florida defense between 2012 and 2016.

If we can pair a defense like those with an offense like the ones we saw between 2018 and 2020, we're a championship team.

Frankly, put those defenses on this team, and I think we're in the conversation. Obviously there's no getting around that Kentucky loss.

"Bend but don't break" is an outcome for many defenses, which may even work for some teams, but it should never be a team's goal.

I got an off topic from 31g8r for this post and don't know why it's off topic, as it was a comment on a prior post.

    Yes 1- 3rd-7
    1- 4th-7

a dramatic improvement although there were a ton of 3-1s
