So, you're willing to trust the Chinese government on numbers, that, if these numbers were higher, might be an embarrassment to the government? An out-of-control viral outbreak killing large numbers of people could cause the overthrow of the government. All communist governments and dictatorships in general are paranoid about this, and for good reason: they are not ruling by the will of the people (they were not freely elected). There is also an ever-present desire to present a front to the outside world that the country can handle anything difficult that comes along, whereas western countries falter (that's the preferred narrative). They want to defend the abilities of the communist government to solve problems. No different than when the high speed train de-railed a few years back (falling 80' from the elevated track) and China immediately set about burying the rail-cars in place (with dead bodies inside), to the horror of the people watching, so they could deny any fatal accident took place. Lying is a standard practice with communist governments. They can't be trusted.

How willing was the Chinese government to admit fatality numbers from Covid? Of course, they covered it up. It wasn't until photographs were published of people dying on the floor of hospital hallways in China and hearses backed up 40-50 deep at the crematoriums and mass graves being dug outside cities that China was willing to get a little honest with the numbers of Covid fatalities.
