That’s literally every coaching hire in the sport. They were all “up & comers” in smaller ponds at some point. Sometimes you miss. We just happen to miss a lot. This program in particular is just not for everyone. And you just never know who can handle it.

You are over complicating this with deep understanding at least for football.
    1. Talk with other AD’s informally about potential targets but not when you are in the process of hiring.
    2. Does the style of coach x fit with fan expectations ie aggressive playcalling.
    3. Reputation for success over time. Is coach x a mover for opportunities or has he made and sustained his program
    4. How is he viewed by assistants.
    5. Can the AD quantify the differences in the product coach x has put forth relative to other candidates
    6. What is coach x success vs common opponents and year end games. Does he deliver on crunch time. Does coach x punch up or down.
    7. How does coach x view rivalry games and his success rate in them. If we get one more damn coach show up with each game is important mentality other heads should roll

The list isnt inclusive but easy to see how we have failed but it isnt rovket science. I bet chatgpt could pick a winner at least 40% of the time we are currently 0-4

Not true last several hire cycles had lateral movers. This is where we have failed.

40% hit rate on coaching hires would be the best AD to have ever lived, or one that had a small sample size and got lucky.

Urban didn't dismiss Cam. But, the university would have.had he not chosen to leave because he was on the hook for several academic dishonesty accusations.

I agree, but to say that didn't throw a monkey wrench into Urban's plans would be a massive understatement.

I remember when Shane was a 4th stringer and when I thought the Kyle Morris led Gators were the worst I'd ever seen. But at least those teams were tough and played great defense.

Thing is, it kinda set up perfect for him at Texas too. I think he would have had to wait a year or two then replace Chris Simms.

But that was such an insensitive chant and we all at some point in our lives felt guilty for saying those two words while watching a football team named the Gators.

"...for decades, UF was a defensive dominant program..."

    UF's best defenses:

Florida Football: Pat Dooley’s 12 best Gators defenses of all time

1 under Graves (60's)--who was known for his offense, 1 under Dooley (70's), 2 under Pell (80's) the rest under SOS (96, 98 and 01), and/or the 21st century.

What decadeS are you talking about? That would be ONLY the 80's, and Muschamp's Gators, who were influenced by Pell's 80's Gators. Perhaps you can lay claim to the 70's as well, but that would be more due to offensive futility, than defensive prowess.

The fact is, UF's greatest success pretty much began with offense--1928 Gators with phantom 4 RB's), Graves' super sophs, and wide open pass heavy offense (Spurrier, Reeves to Alvarez...), Spurrier'a Fun and Gun, Urbs' spread O, Mullen's 11-2 season...

Even Pell's teams had the Great Wall of Florida, the Peace Corps, Ricky Nattiel, Neal Anderson, Lo, Kerwin Bell... (ie offense first).

I love Tom Petty as well but that is a horrible song choice. It’s not a fight song period. It needs to end. I’m jealous of the chickens and their sandstone song from some Norwegian guy. That song pumps a fanbase up. We won’t back down tells me we’re already playing from behind.
