By every measure they think it was better then. Lots of other interesting tidbits, including more people thinking the economy is worse today than the 30’s. I hope that’s a function of people not knowing history.

All about the social hierarchy. Probably a lot of nostalgia for the 1850s as well. Solid regional agrarian economy supported by common sense legal system, in their view

It is a function of a lot of things. Most notably is how Republicans consume news. For all their complaining, the NYT or CNN run stories about the economy regardless of the partisan impact of those stories. Fox News and the multitude of even more extreme outlets simply run them if they help the narrative. So right now they are only running them if they show a a weakening economy. A few months ago I showed this with PPI. Basically, you would only find PPI on Fox News' website when it went up since 2021 or when it went down in Trump's term. On CNN, you saw it every month.

Again, the problem isn't that they are personally struggling. By and large, the people answering like that aren't. It is that they think everybody else is struggling horribly. And it is largely because the barrier between fact and opinion has been slowly broken down in their minds such that it doesn't exist any longer. See also crime stats.

Wow, and it’s not close. Much of maga are older but not many are that old to effectively remember the 50s. it was a period we were the single super power after ww2. The wealthiest country on earth and leader of technology and global politics. our society was developing an effective and comfortable middle class and life in suburbia. And all of that has been propagated in movies and tv and reminisced about still today.
    Fascinating op.

For some, it is them remembering when they were young children before they realized that people were unhappy. For some, it is a call back to a time of social hierarchies, such as wives were more subservient to husbands and didn't get on their case. This has a particularly high resonance for men with divorces, often multiple, a predictor of Trump support.

Outside of childhood and youthful biases, this is what happens when people consume hate porn all day every day. Was at my parents last night and some angry guy was shouting strings of hyperbolic vitriol about rando crimes from immigrants. Gave me a headache and I can't imagine consuming that misery for more than a minute. I loathe today's media and political grifters.

Lots of studies on recency effect. Good memories last a lot longer than bad memories making childhood era seeming better. Plus people remember being a carefree young person and assign that to the times not the age. Also current news cycle only really reports bad news so it seems like the current times are violent when they arent. News did that all throughout history but again, those memories fade way faster than remember being at a baseball game.

But it really spiked in the 50s. Maybe because of baby boomers, the largest generation were kids then?

Rank and file republicans miss the 1950s. The power brokers want the 1850s or the 1750s back (see Alito's decisions for the latter). Workers making pennies in virtual slavery with no retirement or elder healthcare. Work until you drop.

Maybe people with a small penis are less likely to participate in a study about penis size today. Back in the 50’s the guys with a small penis may not have even realized how small it was because they didn’t have access to internet porn.

They especially miss the days of Rockerfeller, Morgen, et al. and the trusts. Killing striking workers was an especially good idea.

Families stuck together back in the 1950's. I know. It's horrible.

Families in the 1950s could afford houses, multiple cars, retirement and annual vacations with no more than high school degrees. American greed mongers have ended that.
