Jeb or Romney running as actual Republicans (not RINOs who spend all of their time just taking shots at other Republicans) as they ran years ago would just not work today.

They'd either have to adopt the "Republican with a backbone" way of doing things or the media, social media, their opposition in the Democratic circle... all of them would eat them alive.

They would treat Jeb and Romney the same way that they're treating DeSantis. How do I know this? Because Joe Biden said Mitt Romney was going to "put ya'll back in chains" in 2012.

That authoritarianism was justified so it doesn't count. :D

Not what I said. DeSantis closed restaurants. Some governors kept them closed longer. When did it become authoritarianism, how many weeks?

That's a bit different than telling private companies what they can or can't include in their employee training.

And they will undoubtedly pick the more vile of the two - Trump.

Here's the problem, Vindi - the GOP base WANTS someone who will anger/insult/troll democrats and the media. That's one of the most important qualities MANY on the right seek in a candidate. Which is why Trump is leading all the polls (and to a lesser extent Desantis in 2nd place). The problem is that sort of behavior alienates independents and moderates on both sides. Biden is NOT a good president. But he was able to win just by being relatively inoffensive to the average American. And he'll win again if y'all trot out another flaming asshole who picks fights with the media and insults anyone who disagrees with him.

I'm not sure how you fix that problem. It's seems to be systemic in the GOP.

As far behind as desantis is polling, POTUS run doesn't make a lot of sense...unless he believes trumps gonna be locked up before the primaries.

In earlier polls DeSantis did better against Biden than Trump. In more recent polls Trump has done better against Biden than DeSantis and it's not Democrats who are responsible for Trump's domination over DeSantis in the Republican primary polls it's MAGA nation that worships Trump as if he were the leader of a cult. Although at this point time and although he polls very low in the hypothetical Republican primary polls, a situation that I expect to change once all of the Republican candidates are on the same stage at the same time, the one potential candidate that Democrats should really fear is Tim Scott. Scott is the only Reaganesque Republican candidate and unlike both DeSantis and Trump who are essentially appealing to grievances he actually presented an optimistic message. If Tim Scott can get through the Republican primaries and I still expect Trump to win the nomination with DeSantis ending up as the Jeb Bush or Scott Walker of 2024, he would be a very formidable general election candidate.

I think his fight against Disney is typical of authoritarian types. It is petty, it is anti capitalist, and anti corporate free speech and it is all about him, not what is good for the residents of Florida.

His attack on vaccines and their manufacturers is anti corporate populism. It is deplorable.

His appointment of Joseph Lapado is a disgrace. The guy is a hack and a fraud.

I think all of these laws surrounding colleges, schools and gays and books are cultural war type populism. While I don’t like how far some on the left have gone on these culture issues, I think what Desantis is doing is far worse.

He went around campaigning for election deniers in 2022

His 6 week abortion law is awful, but that is more towards government mandated religious values.

The shipping of immigrants to other states . Done for no other reason to troll Democrats and pander to his base. This isn’t effective governance. It is wasteful showboating.

Maybe you think that is all great. Fair enough. But most of those I do not see in alignment with Reagan style conservative Republicanism.

I think this op Ed from David Frum is pretty much spot on

Sorry maga, trump is appearing to be your guy.

He is by far the favorite in betting odds and also polls.

That Desantis is a good candidate?? I believe you honestly think this but reason and intelligence is a harder ask.

Desantis is an absolute machine?!? He couldn’t even roll out his announcement without major glitches. It was mocked by everyone.

OK .... and Romney ran on saying Obamacare was going to bankrupt the country, played into the "death panel" lie, and was blowing out of portion the small number of people who had their healthcare plans cancelled .... it's not like he didn't have good sound bites of his own. Obama was too popular to take down. Biden isn't Obama...

    DOAsantis.

Even he knows it, thus the rush to change the law to keep his Gov job after he gets blown out of the primaries.

I think DeSantis only real chance is that Trump gets so wrapped up in his legal troubles that it wears out some of Trump’s supporters. It isn’t a bad strategy but in the interim he runs the risk of even looking more pathetically weak getting his ass kicked over and over by both Trump and Disney.

What about proposing that Title IX mandate men being allowed to compete in women's sports?

What about mandating vaccines via OSHA?

What about deputizing supporters to suppress disfavored news stories and viewpoints on social media?

And that's without getting into all of the other regulatory crap that may have not come from Biden himself, but administrations and agencies he supports and enables.

And all of those examples involve using high office to engage in the culture war, abusing the power of your office, and clubbing political opponents for speech.

DeSantis can't beat Trump or win the general, but I think he would be the more dangerous president. The absolute silver lining to him running is that it will keep him largely out of the state for extended periods of time....fewer unconstitutional laws being enacted.
