    I once had a keshond/black lab mix. She had all the bad habits of each breed but that dog would have taken a bullet for me.

    "Bad" habits: Keshonds are typically hyper attentive guarding their territory. Traditionally it was for guarding barges. That can be annoying. Black labs are really bad chewers until at least 18 months old and always looking to move up in the pack.

    Our Golden Retriever would defend my wife, kids, or our little dog with her life, but I’m pretty sure if I got attacked she’d assist my attacker and treat my body like a fire hydrant when it’s over.

    Yes, the most popular dog of the Netherlands. (thus the Barge Dog fame). Interesting history behind this dog. I go to alot of dog parks, you see one occasionally.

    Ok, update on the meniscus injury. I did take off a basketball season (about 3 months) to work on my knee. Great advice from members here, and I incorporated cycling via recumbent bike at the gym. On a whim, I started doing the stairmaster as well, so really I'm attacking the knee joint from very different angles and positions than normal. I also started using the leg extension and leg curl machines every time I go to the gym whether it's leg day or not. I don't use them with both legs at the same time, I use them in a way that each leg is exercised independently. I always finish up on the bike or stairmaster. The results have been pretty amazing. It's not only strengthening the weak parts of my knee from the injury, but it's also correcting power imbalances from left to right and quad to hamstring.

    I also sort of ditched ruck marching and went back to running for cardio. I previously couldn't miles run often due to pain, but the stronger my knees get from the above exercises, the less of an issue it's becoming. I'm hitting run times close to pre-injury now.

    I still get occasional pain if I put my knee in the wrong spot, or if I squat low or bend it too much where my heel gets close to making contact with my hamstring. I'm working on that, but I suspect it will be the for a long time, if not permanently. I have my first basketball game this week, so we'll see how it translates on the court. One thing I know is whoever is guarding me is going to get the cardio workout of their life.

    Nice, glad you've recovered well.

    At our age, it's fun when we have great cardio and get an opponent tired. lol...Small (major?) victory in its own way!

    Once scored 66 points , took all day and about 10 games but I usually leave that part out.

    That's great to hear!!

    Proper low bar back squats may help that last piece (getting comfort in deep flexion). Start light. Add slowly. But yeah, getting low is a limitation I've just come to accept now. any ball below mid shin is just going by me lol.

    League game last night. First game with a completely new team I never met or played with before. I missed the first game due to work travel and they lost by 50 so I had low expectations for this season. I did feel as though I could help whatever the issues were.

    Played my trademark tough defense and constant movement. I had about 3-4 court vision type passes that got some praise. We had one guy shooting lights out as well. Very good scorer. We have a competent big who can score and rebound. I ended up with 5 points on a 3 pointer and a layup. I could have had much more, but my teammates were inexplicably refusing to pass me the ball. It was strange. Got to the point where I yelled at them a few times. They definitely were playing favorites. Big man liked to get a rebound and dribble up court (which I hate). I was hands down the best PG on the team so it was frustrating.

    We won by 13, but were up 20 when the starters subbed out with 7 minutes left. Our bench might have lost the game if starters didn’t go back in.

    Mixed bag. I played well, and my team played well, but we need to figure out the team dynamics.

    As far as my knee… not really a good result there. I’ve run miles and miles on it with no issue but basketball is a different animal. Not even squats and deadlifts have that kind of impact. Very sore last night and today.

    I played freshman ball in my first year at Binghamton. No 3-point shot back then. We played an exhibition game against one of the school’s fraternities. They were called social clubs because they didn’t have frat houses. I popped for 60. Word got back to my old high school coach that Jack had scored 60 points in a freshman game. He said that it must have been against a fraternity. The man was prescient.

    Sorry to hear about the knee pain returning. Have you tried PRP therapy(a form of stem cell treatment). It worked wonders on my shoulder and I’ve been told it works wonders on the meniscus).

    I had both of my knees scoped due to the meniscus about 10+/- years ago. I was out for about 6-8 weeks for each knee, but that was it. Still playing at 58.

    I have that same issue, every game I’ve played in (but I’m sure for different reasons).

    Quite the accomplishment. I never sniffed 35 points, let alone 40, 50, or 60 in a game. And I didn’t make it to college ball. You must have been really good.

    Yup did PRP about 6 weeks ago. Everything was great until last night. Basketball is the great humbler. I was able to run, lift, you name it, but one game if bball showed me that surgery is probably the only thing I can do. The problem is the torn meniscus flap got caught and then when I straightened my leg it just kind of popped free and caused the pain and inflammation. It needs to get cleaned up.

    You have to give the PRP time. At least for me, it took about 5 months for the pain to dissipate. I couldn’t even do a push-up with the pain in my left shoulder, and about 5 months after, I noticed the pain had pretty much gone away. It’s like I didn’t have the tear,but it took a lot of time.

    I had almost zero pain before I played last night. It wasn’t really a matter of PRP working or not working. The loose meniscus flap is a constant issue that I don’t believe PRP or strength training can fully address. That said, I was able to run and do pretty much anything except play basketball. I suppose I could just retire from basketball, but it would be a shame to do that.

    Bummer, dude.

    You tried. Cutting out cartilage is never ideal, but tomorrow is never guaranteed either and lots of people get miniscus trimmed with no long term effects.

    In the end, its a judgement call for you and weighing the extension of your playing years v late life mobility. Good luck!
