I grew up with the "phantom" tag of second on double plays as a way to avoid injuries and then it was cleaned up by enforcing rules about interference. No more phantom tags of second required. And runners could no longer slide well outside of the path to take out fielders. It really improved the game.

Maybe a similar enforcement of the rules could work. Don't let the first baseman block the whole base when accepting a thrown ball. Call it interference as it should be. Make the first baseman allow the runner full access to first base or it is interference. Problem solved.
