So the GOP hoots and hollers every day for years that the border is an existential crisis that must be dealt with immediately. The remaining sane GOP senators along with the Dems put together a bipartisan bill to deal with the issue.

Now the GOP Speaker won't take up the bill on orders of their rapist presumptive presidential candidate because he needs this big issue to run on.

This issue is such a massive security crisis that it can be ignored until early 2025 so Trump can implement ethnic cleansing maneuvers if he wins instead of anything reasonable. They are also threatening to censure Senator Lankford for daring to work on this bill.

Also, the House wants to impeach Homeland Secretary Mayorkas. Not for a high crime or misdemeanor mind you, but "to send Biden a message."

    Completely unserious.

The GOP certainly isn’t a serious opposition party.

What was the last piece of major GOP legislation passed? Even when they had complete control for 2 years? They're a performative political party at this point. I may not like everything the Dems do but they actually get things done.

governing or just power? ("governing" = tax cuts for the super rich, taking away reproductive rights, banning books, culture war bs, trying to create a theocracy etc)

Their last major piece of legislation enacted by the GOP was their budget busting tax cut passed at the end of 2017 and thanks to the legislation the deficit increased despite falling unemployment and a growing economy.

is it possible that some believe that not adding more burdensome/useless legislation is actually a positive ? In addition is it possible that we have a long history of “enacting legislation to get things done” possibly makes it worse and costs more money

agree that if you ‘allowing’, using that term very loosely, the producers to keep more of what they earn while simultaneously increasing the already absurd and grotesquely inefficient level of spending to an astronomical level then yes deficit will grow.

    Border security requires legislation.

Hiring more border patrols (agents and equipment) and immigration judges require appropriations from congress.

    Infrastructure requires appropriations from congress.

So I guess we see who is really for “open borders” now. Not that there was any doubt. Gang of 8 bill was blown up by Republicans in 2013 in a similar way. It’s all about stunts and performative politics for the rubes.

No offense but this is a cop out answer. Small Governance isn't the same as no governance. Look at the topic of the OP, they arent interested in fixing the provlem. The right ran on overturning ACA for years and then did nothing. They do nothing not in the name of small government, but because they are incompetent.

As I have said prior. Im yet to see a copy of the bill rather than a summary, so I cannot debate merits. Also, one could counter and say the existing admin is not serious as they have spent years pushing through EO and similar for the sole purpose of undoing anything resembling a controlled border. Remain in Mexico could easily be an enacted today and would cut the traffic down by 75% immediately. When they do that, then we can talk about ‘seriousness’.

edit— I appreciate the ‘no offense’. I’m certainly a believer that people can vehemently disagree and do it in a respectful way

Why would we need to know what's in the bill? The right has explicitly said they won't pass it because it would help Biden. That's all we need to know.

Again, let's no cloak no governance in a cape of small governance

all l said was I personally cannot debate it without seeing it. Maybe others can. If the bill said we are hiring 100,000 border agents while giving amnesty to everyone it would be a no. And vice versa I am guessing if the bill said they were going to round up 100% and deport within 6 months you would likely be a hard no. Impossible
For me to speak intelligently without reading it

in addition remain in Mexico could be done today. That would reduce the flow immediately. One could argue if the admin was serious they would do this. Does not require a single vote. So call me a cautious

Remain in Mexico was a humanitarian disaster. And while it might slow the flow of migrants entering the US on a temporary basis, what happens to any dam that builds up too much pressure? It bursts.

How many people would stay in Mexico being abused before they say enough and charge over the border anyway? If 50,000 all said enough waiting in Mexico is enough, then what?

Mexico has no infrastructure to handle the influx if they were to made to wait. It's not a long term solution to a problem that's been going on for generations.
