We are seeing the fallout of NIL. Reports were CC came back with a lucrative NIL deal. Days later, Reeves…. a kid who had previously said he was all-in and recruited Richard…. puts his name out there for the bidding. This blows and I’m about done with college athletics.
We just need to get some firm P5 regulations. The NCAA waited so long to address this that they let someone else establish terms. Now they are completely incapable of catching up.
I'm with you, Brent. Many of us used to cherish the amateur nature of collegiate athletics. Now, many of us are saying "show them the $" just out of hopes that our favorite players will choose UF . . . . even if just to choose not to transfer out. We are learning what it's been like to be Kentucky basketball fans and frankly, that sucks.
Two points that are important: 1) I do not know there to be a connection between Reeves and any NIL pursuits. I’m reading tea leaves, and perhaps incorrectly. In fact, @Efawcett7 posted this as not being a “highest bidder” scenario. 2) I place no blame on players who seek to cash-in on NIl. Quite frankly, it would be foolish not to pursue those opportunities. My frustration is not with players, families or programs. I am sickened by the ncaa for creating this mess.
NCAA created this mess by refusing to pay college players and restricting their ability to earn revenue from other sources. Instead of a reasonable solution, we have the wild, wild west.
I'd say the NCAA failed when the number of sports being financed by football/basketball increased. They didn't foresee the resultant push for these two sports to bring in more & more money. Things have snowballed & now seem out of control.
If this is correct then I agree that it is a damn bad sign. But if this is just "business as now" then it is bad but we shall see how it all plays out.
Just remember that the UAA and the NCAA may have done little to thwart this change because there was always a risk of losing tax exempt status by garnering attention. They never should have had that status given their obvious professionalism.
It'll be interested to see the relationship between fans and highly compensated players. If a guy tanks, what will the fallout be? These days, a Chris Walker like player would likely fetch a pretty good NIL deal.
Not saying it was the right way to do it but wasn't restricting their ability to earn revenue due to them knowing the boosters and schools would just give the kids "jobs" at dealerships and other venues while paying them exorbitant salaries to not show up to work? I.e. funnel them money and buy players. I blame the greedy fat cats that get off on injecting themselves into the game to satisfy their egos and buy their favorite play things.
This is actually an interesting point. The argument against booing or criticizing a college athlete has been that he/she “isn’t getting paid”. So now what?
Maybe just accept we are a developmental team for Europe pro leagues. Ill still watch and cheer for the Gators.
