When my grandparents came through Ellis Island virtually all immigrants who wanted to enter the United States were admitted. The only ones who were turned away were those with obvious illnesses or serious physical disabilities. Immigrants were required to have $19 roughly the equivalent of $500 to $600 in today's dollars.
