How a ruling that Dartmouth basketball players are school employees, can join union may change college sports - CBSSports.com Now a collective bargaining agreement to end this free for all in paying players.
BS! Dartmouth is a nothing sports college... who cares what they think and do. Their best-case scenario is that half the country of college football goes with this clown show, and the other half does NOT go with it and eventually they hope to get an AFL - NFL type merger in the hopes of making college football exactly like the NFL... so corporate America can ruin college football like they did the NFL. I can see their intentions a mile away... Dartmouth's only hope is for the federal government to take over this and take college sports out of the hands of states. This is why I never want the feds to get involved with college sports.
You’re jumping pretty far ahead. A cba won’t stop the free for all. The third party money can’t and won’t be regulated. If this goes nationwide, it will likely kill non revenue sports, but it’s unlikely to fix much of anything in the money makers, imo.
This is at a private college but will have ramifications down the line at some point. It will be appealed and take years to make it's way to the Supreme Court.
You also have to understand that Dartmouth doesn't offer scholarships so the players are paying their own way to play but the school requires more than the 20 hrs the NCAA allows for athletics.
Maybe I'm out of the loop, but since when was the NFL ruined... especially in the context of "ruined by Corporate America?
Yeah, NFL viewership is back up to almost its highest point. People still tune into it. For me, I still prefer the college game. Some have been turned off by the fact that kids get paid now. I don't see the big deal there, really. They just need to get a handle on it so that they kids are not the ones running the show. There needs to be stability and parity. Otherwise, it's just whoever pays the most, wins the most (even moreso than in the past, that is).
I like both. For me, there is no game professional or college that comes even close to watching the Gators play in football or basketball. But... let's imagine for a minute that I never went to college, or that UF did not have any sports teams. I don't believe any sporting event would captivate me the same way. I'd still watch some of both, but it would really depend on the matchups. I don't think one product is better than the other, per se. Fantasy football was the greatest thing invented for generating interest in sports. It gives relevance to every NFL game, no matter how bad the teams are.
People get so upset at the notion of seeing other people getting paid. Nothing worse than a jealous, bitter pocket-watcher.
Fantasy football did the opposite for me. When I started playing it, I only focused on the players on my fantasy team. I didn't give a damn who won the games (aside from the Saints, of course). It became more about the individual and less about the team. I don't think I've watched an entire NFL game in years. College football, I've watched a whole lot of SEC games and high profile games. It's just different....for now.
Not too many people seem to care about that. But who wants to watch a pay to win "sport". At a certain point it becomes just buying your own rings at the local trophy shop with some extra steps. people and businesses willing to pay you to use your name, images or likeness in commercials, on merchandise (uniforms from the gator sports shop for example), in video games, etc... What we have now is simply paying for kids to show up until they don't feel like it anymore and just switch teams. I think you post mostly in the political board and your probably best suited posting there with your black and white, simple minded takes mixed in with weak insults.
If all this comes to pass and CFB is made up of "professionals", will that be the death nell for Title 9? If CFB or BB players are employees, then there is no need to fund women's sports in the same numbers. There's not a requirement for Women's NFL (Lingerie football league doesn't count).
Well, when they want me to pay them and they haven't done anything yet it tends to be a little out of whack. The obvious problem is that kids are getting NIL money that isn't really for NIL. Pretty much no high school kid can earn real NIL money in the marketplace. I have less problem with portal kids getting paid, but there needs to be some eligibility limitations re transferring. But you are right in one respect, they are only getting paid because some school boosters are willing to buy players. IF they would regulate themselves it wouldn't be an issue. But who is willing to walk away and destroy their team? But it IS destroying college athletics, I'm not sure that is debatable....and by and large that is why people are upset. You are simply making an assumption of other peoples views in that regard
This is interesting. I think in the short term, the University would just have to offer the same deal to everyone so employed, i.e. scholarship athletes (though a previous poster noted that at Dartmouth they do not get athletic scholarships, so, maybe varsity athletes). And NIL deals would continue to exist outside of whatever the school does. But, if the football players start to get paid based on the TV contracts, I would think there might have to be changes. When the school are paying the salary, and football salaries include the big TV, gate, etc. bucks, I could easily see where the school has to spin off the football program in to some kind of private entity.
Yeah, I root for a team... MY team. I'd say that if you didn't have a team prior to fantasy football, then did you really care who won the games before it? There's no net loss of interest, only a gain in interest. I somewhat rooted for the Giants as a NY native, but didn't really watch a lot of NFL football. Since I've been playing fantasy, I watch a ton of football and get excited about so many games that I normally wouldn't watch. I'm a bigger/better football fan as a result. The NFL team I root for usually is tied to a UF player. When Tebow was with the Broncos, I rooted for them big time. If Trask had become the starter, I'd have rooted for the Bucs. Right now, my hopes are in Anthony Richardson staying healthy so I can get behind the Colts.
I'm fascinated to see how the Ivy's respond. They're the one league that walks the walk when they say academics come before athletics. Look at their league basketball schedule, no midweek games. They don't pour tons of money into sports. I wouldn't be shocked if they consider saying "we don't see professionalizing student athletes in our academic mission, we're done with NCAA athletics".
I am all for kids getting paid, but the transfer portal needs to be reviewed. Bring back the old rule about sitting out a year and maybe add a waiver that if your head coach leaves you don’t need to sit a year. That portal is out of control right now
Oh, Fantasy has brought in new interest in the game. Makes people watch the games, but not for the game itself. Watching a team sport where the final score doesn't matter because my fantasy player got his points....that's not appealing to me. To each his own.
