"As the male population at New College has increased, admitted students' academic performance has also declined. The incoming class has lower test scores and GPAs than last year's incoming freshman—with the average ACT score down to 24 from 27 last year. Student-athletes scored a paltry 22 on average, yet received merit scholarships at a higher rate than other students."

    Note: ACT 23-24 = 75th percentile, 28 = 90th.

That's how you improve your college.

Dancing outlawed at Liberty University??? Ha. Hadn’t heard of that, but it’s pretty funny.

If that doesn’t highlight the unintentional irony of the schools name, I don’t know what would.

    First heard that as…
"Why don't Southern Baptists have sex standing up? So nobody thinks they're dancing."

The dentist who practices with your wife received her undergrad degree from New College according to the website. What does she think of all this "hyperbole" and what DeSantis has done?

To balance out the narrative (might be a reason freshman enrollment is up almost 25%…

“I read former New College of Florida President Donal O'Shea's recent lamentation in the Herald-Tribune regarding the departure of faculty members from the college and the community. O'Shea called it a tragedy, and he pointed the finger at Gov. Ron DeSantis.

We all know that there are two ways to look at a glass of water which is neither empty nor full. O’Shea sees a glass less than half-empty and leaking. The governor and those who support the changes see the same glass, but its leaks are being plugged and it’s beginning – after years of neglect – to hold water. …”

New College of Florida is off its death bed - and on the move

Enrollment down? Just start a sports program, in this case baseball. Have to wonder what the l/t $ cost of that will be.

New College was clearly a mess. And no doubt the leadership as the school sunk will defend their actions. I honestly have not paid that close attention. But figured if there was a recent article out about how terrible things are right now…there would also be an article from a different point of view.

Are you saying that adding programs was a bad idea to help correct the problems at the college? And I guess they have the biggest baseball roster in college baseball history lol…

Yep. Baseball got 70 roster spots complete with 10K each in scholarship money. Contrast that with UF’s roster of 37 o_O

In addition, their academic qualifications are below average for the school.

So, the school has financial issues and they decide to add a money losing baseball program in addition to an overpaid president. Doesn't make much fiscal sense to me, but hey I get it Desantis likes baseball.

Have you ever heard of the idea that sometimes it takes money to make money (or even it takes money to better the outcome for the state in a case like this possibly)? Shoot...I despise the idea of spending the amount of money we do at UF for facilities. Are they nice? Absolutely. Necessary...Sadly yes in the current climate probably. But yes sometimes you need leadership with a vision. And I can guarantee you that will take money.

I suppose they could have continued down the failed path they were headed until it all went away...

What’s weird is the NCAA limits baseball to only 12 full scholarships or up to 27 “partial” scholarships. So that explains UF’s roster of 37. Many of those players, at least 10 but probably more, are partial scholarship or walk-on.

To have 70 baseball players is nutso, esp if they all got $10,000. Given the excess of players, wonder how many of those had offers any where else to real programs (at least NAIA or lower NCAA levels) vs. how many were political patronage.

It’s all politics. It is certainly not due to revenue or fiscal responsibility as the new NCF president’s salary was nearly tripled and the new administration was granted an EXTRA $15 million after the takeover. I wonder if the previous NCF staff could have used an extra 15 mils? It’s what that governor does to programs that got their thinking right.

After DeSantis takeover, record funding for New College

Just shut the place down. The state had to financially bail out the school years ago and it has been
a money drain ever since. It came out this week that one of the few dorms on campus has a mold issue which will require students to be housed in area hotels and that will not be cheap. Many of the other campus buildings are outdated and in need of repair and finding any other affordable off-campus in an expensive area of Sarasota is next to impossible. There is no room for any growth on the current campus and with only 1000 students being affected, why continue to throw away money to try to keep the school going?

The fact is the school has struggled to survive for years. The recent leadership was not good and then DeSantis was an idiot and made things worse with the changes he made. The location in Sarasota has never worked (and never will) so it’s time to pull the plug.
