Pat botched the replay review; and only took a second look because the announcer told him they screwed it up. It was an entirely bizarre sequence. And at least per the game thread… it was part of a terribly officiated game.
Pat Adams makes Teddy Valentine look like a refereeing genius. don’t know how many times he has hosed us over the years, but it’s a lot.
At least they asked the announcer if they got it right and the uva grad announcer says nope. Still, if our 95% free throw shooter hits both we hold for the last shot. Completely different game. So frustrating. But I think this team is going to be really good.
As is almost always the case . . . ANY of dozens of things could have changed the outcome of this game. I don't put it on any one players shoulders.
Saw Pat Adamds and knew the call was about to be screwed up BEFORE they went to the replay booth. Hahaha
I was stuck at work and then in a concert at work, so didn't get to watch a minute of it. Can you give a Cliff's notes of what happened on the play and officiating?
@aka said he couldn't see the game for at least awhile so I don't know if he saw that. I did. Clayton brought the ball to the top left (quarter court or so) and picked up his dribble and a Virginia player reached across and slapped at the ball as Clayton was bringing it up for an overhead pass. Clayton had it around, maybe just above, waist level. The Virginia player's right hand slapped the ball, on Clayton's left, down and the spin from the slap took it OB. It was already close to the sideline. I thought it was exactly what it was when I saw it live. The homers, err, um, announcers kept saying it went off Clayton's foot. Wrong. Anyway, they finally showed a close-up stop-motion and there was ZERO doubt.
Late in the game… a critical possession… Clayton was stripped. The ball bounced out of bounds. The officials signaled a turnover to Virginia. Clayton immediately protested and the officials gave the signal for a review. As they reviewed, the broadcast replayed … showing it out of bounds off virginia defender. The announcers said…”this ball will go back to Florida”. But alas… Pat Adams was reviewing. Officials came back to the court and awarded ball to Virginia. The announcers were stunned. UVA was to inbound directly in from of the announcers. As the official walked over, one of the announcers told the officials they made the wrong call. Amazingly, this compelled them to take another look…. during which they reversed the call. Upon reversal, Bennett went nuts and began yelling at the announcer for tipping off the officials! Lol! Only Pat Adams could’ve screwed up the first review… and then make it even worse by being compelled to reconsider by an announcer. Lol!
i was tuned in by this point. the announcers actually said replay showed Florida ball, and eventually told the official they botched it. This caused a second review, and a reversal. It was wild.
I was listening to Lee for someone I could trust by then but he was frustrated they wouldn't show a good angle.
they had a really good angle and it was obvious. Amazingly, Adams screwed it up. What was hilarious was the announcer saying… “Bennett is now yelling at me from across the court for telling the officials of their mistake. Well, I’m sorry… it was Florida’s ball. I can live with him being mad at me.”
What was strange is the announcers seemed to imply that the officials didn’t have the same replay that showed they ball clearly wasn’t touched
Yes, they showed the clip of Bennet yelling what appeared to be “That’s on you. You can’t do that.” Here's a story: 'Did we get it right?': How Cory Alexander got mixed up in a sticky replay situation during the Virginia game
I’ve never seen an announcing crew caught up in a game a like that in 40 years of watching hoops. Wild scene.
Turnovers and offensive efficiency. Guard play was...... discouraging. . Tough to lose when you have 21 offensive rebounds. I don't know how good UVA is but from a first game (for me) perspective, I'm already liking our squad as being better than last year.
That was awesome. Thank you to that announcer. Normally an insane situation like that goes against the Gators.
