It originated in African American English and gained more widespread use beginning in 2014 as part of the Black Lives Matter movement. By the end of that same decade it was also being applied by some as a general pejorative for anyone who is or appears to be politically left-leaning.

So you use the alternative definition as a perjorative to anyone socially to the left of you. I like the phrase my heart is slightly to the left my wallet is firmly in my right pocket.

 

Come on man. Donald Trump is the source of this division. It was legit negotiating and voting settling things before Trump. Now it is fight to the death no compromise. WTF...signed former republican

 

The best one I've seen is from urban dictionary. Wokeism....today's hottest religion. Joining it allows simple-minded people to pride themselves on believing they are more enlightened than, more compassionate than, and morally superior to, most of their fellow human beings.

 

I think that's a completely honest assessment of how a conservative views wokeism. It just reeks of shame and insecurity. Thanks for sharing!

 

Today in Wokeism: Cracker Barrel provides an Impossible Meat plant-based sausage. Apparently, providing customers with that option is woke.

 

You can put cow manure in a wrapper and sell it to some people.. As long as you include "sustainably sourced", "fair trade", and "farm to market" on the label.. Whether that is woke or not is up for discussion.

 

Yeah, we need to go back to the good ole days of Twinkies! Polysorbate 60. Real food! None of this woke stuff!

 

The customer base is why I don't go to Cracker Barrel anymore. Creeps me out.

It's not the food, it's the wrapper that is woke questionable. If you buy Avocado's (mostly from mexico), do you really think because the label says 'sustainably sourced', they are any different than other Avocado's?

 

How is labeling something as "sustainably sourced" "woke questionable," specifically? Again, it seems like the label is used as a garden variety "I don't like this newish thing" for people on the right.
