I sure hope you're right. Perhaps I overestimate shorty's chances w/o considering the female and minority vote.
This is a nice fantasy thread (especially Tilly's ludicrous excuses post) but the GOP is stuck with Trump. Either he is the nominee or he runs 3rd party and makes sure the GOP candidate loses.
This seems like a lot of rationalization to me. His whole agenda is demonizing certain groups and instilling fear in his target audience. The don’t say gay bill is a negative labeling but it is true that in schools a teacher probably can’t say gay. Maybe not kidnapping, but the Florida governor transporting immigrants to places like Martha’s Vineyard under false pretenses is really just flat out shitty. These aren’t policy moves, they are political stunts.
I truly believe DeSantis wants to keep Florida from becoming the new California. To his credit, Floridians have overwhelmingly endorsed that platform.
Sure, man. Teachers are allowed to talk about homosexuality all they want in Florida ... they'll just get fired for it ...
My problem with him is he's "weaponizing" big government and trying to cram things down the throats of a populace which, according to most every poll, doesn't want them. He is sharp, though.
You realize conservatives advocate for state level government, right? So we can't say yet DeSantis is "weaponizing big government." He has the mandate to govern the state to the liking of his constituents. If he proceeds to convert this to the federal level, then we can talk about "weaponizing big government." I truly hope he wouldn't do that. My gut feel is he would defer to the states on most things. There are some things that require federal involvement. That is simply inevitable. I do disagree with his handling of Disney, but I don't think he believes he can get away with that at the federal level.
Yes, I realize today's conservatives give lip service - "advocate" as you say - to a number of things, e.g., "family values". But to your point, from the perspective of a school board, Tallahassee is "big government". Furthermore, some of the things DeSantis has done have not been "to the liking of his constituents", e.g., the abortion bill.
So when DeSantis tells us he will weaponize big government by enacting such things as a Federal 6 week abortion ban, federal anti-woke laws, and the like, you choose not to believe him?
I realize it sucks that school boards have to listen to parents now in Florida, but that's hardly "big government." They are supposed to listen to parents. And it's not like the Florida 2022 electorate didn't know where DeSantis stood on abortion. He could have probably have gotten the votes in the Florida legislature to ban it outright.
And now our performative candidate "governor" wants to go after Anheuser Busch for being woke. He is a ludicrous human being.
