If as a teacher, you are talking about sex to little kids in school, you deserve to lose your licence.

 

Thanks for your comments. I think peoples' views about the state of public education is interesting. Not referring to you, but many complain about how bad public schools and teachers are but then (rightfully in my view) were very stressed out about the impact the loss of classroom time and instruction due to Covid would have on their children academically. Maybe those are not the exact same people, but I think there's a lot of overlap, as I've heard both sentiments from the political right. I think those positions are difficult to reconcile. Teachers have a very tough job, and by and large, I think public school teachers do a great job.

My dad had me go to one of the worst public middle schools in the area in one of the worst neighborhoods. He thought it would be good for me I guess and also, he vocally supported public education and didn't want to look like a hypocrite by pulling strings to get me in a better public school or sending me to a private school. The quality of teachers there varied. I had some excellent teachers and a couple that I didn't think were that good. Saw and had my share of fights. Made many great friends. Overall, I think the experience was good for me.

I don't think public school teachers should be using class time to promote their partisan beliefs. I do think the paranoia about gay instruction and grooming is way out of hand at least based upon the absence of any evidence I've seen which would justify it.

I too attended a very rough public middle and high school. I saw some shit. Lol.
But I must also say that I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to send my kids to a private school. There is no doubt that public school is better than none. I don’t want to convey a sense that if you can’t afford it you’re screwed, because it’s just not true. Many fine folks survived public education.
I think my children will be just fine not experiencing the liberalism that will soon greet them with a warm embrace….in college. Seems most of the sexuality discussions will make more sense in a college setting.

 

So if you happen to teach at a private school, you somehow become a competent teacher, like magic almost

I was in high school too in the late '70's, and one thing I remember the most... "teachers leave them kids alone..."

All kidding aside, I never took the advice, or teacher's personal opinions on anything... I knew the difference between curriculum and opinions even back then.

 

I don't have kids, but if I had a son, I think I'd want him to have the experience that I had. If I had a daughter, I would probably want her in a better, safer school than the middle school I went to (my elementary and high schools were pretty good). That's probably a bit sexist on my part, but that's my gut feeling if I'm being honest.

 

Liberals don't like state/county guidelines... And most teachers are liberals.

 

I attended private school, sent my kids to private school and long advocated for them. Until recently. My employee's wife teaches at a local private school in Brevard County. Took her 3 attempts to pass the GED. She is in the process of obtaining some online degree, yet she's able to teach 5th and 6th grade students at a local private school. Schools are desperate to put bodies in the classroom and I don't think private schools are immune to this.

 

Indeed. I know plenty of teachers who've alternated between public and private jobs, its the same crop of people.

 

Educated people isn’t what republicans want. The more knowledge and education you have the less likely you are to be a fooled zombie shouting “lock her up”…. Or…. “Who’s gonna pay for the wall?? Mexico!!!”.

 

Oh and one thing I have always heard about private schools is that drugs are everywhere because the kids have money. Not sure if anyone has any takes on that issue.

 

I wanted the kids back in school NOT so much for the teachers personal views, but I felt it was best for them to be in the surrounds with other children, without mask on them. There is NOTHING to "reconcile" about that position/opinion.

 

This law has never been anything but a solution in search of a non-existent problem in order to bolster DeSantis' "anti-woke" cred among the Republican base in preparation for a '24 POTUS run. Has nothing to do with the curriculum actually being taught in Florida's primary schools. Just like the fiction that primary schools "teach CRT curriculum" when in reality none actually do.

Now we have schools in Texas sending home DNA test kits for their students in case to record their gene strand in case they are blown to shreds like the Uvalde kids. But somehow that's OK. All brought to you by the party who claims to want to protect your right to privacy.

Yes, teachers with character and discipline are magically attracted to private schools with corresponding values.

 

I have 21 years of public education under my belt. Public school for K-12; 4 years at Binghamton University getting a BS and 4 years at UF getting a JD and then an LLM in taxation. I don’t believe that any teacher tried to indoctrinate me in anything during those 21 years, and I got a great education. Now, in Florida, if a gay teacher has a photo on her desk of she and her wife, she risks getting fired and losing her license. No wonder there’s a teacher shortage. Throw in that almost 2/3rds of UF’s teachers are looking to get out, and it doesn’t look good for public education in Florida.
