Trump almost certainly doesn't listen to his handlers. He still believes that he knows more than anyone else including his own campaign advisors. I suspect that if Trump actually followed their script he would have performed much better in the debate. The only real question is how successful will the people running Trump's campaign be at resurrecting the Willie Horton and Swift Boat strategies and as far as the latter is concerned it seems that they've may have already given up at trying to "swift boat" Tim Walz. I do think we will be seeing many more ads exploiting the deaths of victims of illegal immigrants. How effective they will be among undecided or swing voters remains to be seen.
