I've Googled more than I want to admit without any results.

Can anyone illuminate for me what organized retail theft looks like? Do they pull the truck up to the loading dock and just load it up? Is it usually an inside job? Are they intercepting shipments on the way to the store?

Oh, come on it's way more than diapers and toothpaste. They are stealing clothes, shoes, phones, electronics...
Try a little harder to look at the problem without your ideology glasses on.

I am rooting for the little guy mom and pop who got predatory priced out of their business by these big box stores.

Society isn’t coming unglued, you simply have retailers with shrinking profits after record profitability in the inflation price orgy, post-covid. Now they are looking at any expense to cut and marginally profitable stores with higher shrink rates makes sense.

The last few years retail stores have become very militant with their workers who put themselves in harms way confronting thieves. So now, a small number of thieves take it for granted that they have a window before the police arrive to get out so they have adjusted tactics that are much more visible making it seem scarier. The incremental dollar loss from theft has as much to do with costs going up than anything.

It’s more expensive when something is stolen, combined with the videos of newer tactics makes a good story for the news.

I don't know the extent to which they're organized or carried out in the exact same way, but here's an article from today.

Looting erupts in Center City, spreads to other parts of Philadelphia; at least 20 arrested

A society where there is private property and also vast inequality makes theft of property inevitable, do you see a way that is avoidable without state repression and violence? Is that a civilization?

I don't know, its not because Target the company isn't profitable, because it is. As I sort of jokingly said in another thread, most of what passes for business in this country is simply real estate acquisition and sales. Maybe its cutting their losses on property value of that store, maybe its staffing shortages/turnover, unionization threats, rising labor costs or other lots of other reasons. I doubt its one reason that boils down to retail theft alone. I'm pretty sure overall employees steal way more from the company than customers!

To discourage theft? I dont think they are as concerned about that as people posting here.

I believe you’ve stated before that you own property.
I don’t know if they’re rentals or just vacation homes. If your property is looted, squatted or damaged…are you cool to just allow them to go ahead and do what they need to do?
Sounds like you wouldn’t call the sheriff and you’d be cool to let them take whatever they want.

The clearance rate on property crimes is well below 20%. The main reason to file a police report is for your insurance company to compensate you on a theft claim, not because the cops will go to any great lengths to get your stuff back, much less actually catch the people who stole the goods.

So basically private property created crime? Is that what you are saying?

Well Proudhon did say property is theft! There is obviously a relation between private property and the motivations for property crime.

    Thanks…
    For not answering the question.
Would you allow the random public to seize your property?
Seems like you would say ok, have at it.

If you own property isn't that a little unfair to expect insurance to cover your loss?
