Supreme Court rules for coach whose prayers on football field raised questions about church-state separation

    WASHINGTON —
The Supreme Court ruled Monday for a former high school football coach whose prayers at the 50-yard line drew crowds and controversy, declaring his public prayers were protected as free speech.

The 6-3 decision is a symbolic victory for those who seek a larger role for prayers and religion in the public schools.

The court stressed that Coach Joe Kennedy’s prayers began as private and personal expression and were not official acts of promoting religion at school.

    YES!

Sharia Circles on football fields next, by school reps. All private and such, of course.

I think we can all agree that “private and personal” means doing it during a work event on a floodlit field surrounded by as many of the local citizens as possible.

“Johnny, this is a totally optional prayer that the person who decides your playing time will be leading. Don’t feel pressured to join in on his totally optional prayer in order to stay in his good graces and secure playing time.”

So they would also be ok with someone sacrificing a goat at midfield, or is it only THEIR brand of religion they are supporting?

It’s worse than that, IMO. If Johnny can play, this type of coach might still want to benefit from those Johnny yards.

What really happens is Johnny is judged by every zealot in attendance, who helpfully spread that judgment to anyone who couldn’t make it.

It’s a public litmus test. Think the crowd-talk will be Johnny’s Constitutional right to not be coerced into religious dogma? Or his heathenism?

What's really impressive about this opinion is that the majority brazenly lies about the facts to justify the outcome they wanted to reach.

Why would a coach pray after the game?

If it's not a Christian prayer they'll just invent a meaningless distinction.

The result is all that matters.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect

For decades now, I have watched coaches and players from both teams run to the North end zone to kneel and pray before games, and then FCA players and coaches from both do the same together at midfield after.

This coach should never have been fired unless he was found to be discriminating against those who did not share either his faith or the desire to publicly show.

For that matter, why at any time? It’s a football game.

But afterwards it’s for the public spectacle. It lets everyone know what a good soldier you are. Also exposes the people who shouldn’t be trusted.

“How dare the Supreme Court allow football teams to pray after a public high school game.”

“Republicans are such fascists who won’t leave me alone.”

Modern leftism is plastering LGBTQ+ dogma all over public schools at all grade levels, but prohibiting almost any form of public prayer in schools.

“Republicans started the culture war and they won’t leave me alone. Reeeeee.”

Watching a personally-approved action for decades means nothing.

This coach even putting these kids in this position tells the tale. “Join the circle or don’t, your choice, and everyone knows it.”

Therefore coaches and players are free to kneel in prayer during the National Anthem.

The leftist position has been that they can kneel for the National Anthem, but can’t have a team prayer after a football game.

This doesn’t make the point you think it does.

I don’t like it, but refusing to stand for the Anthem or even acknowledge it has been the status quo at public schools for some time.

The record showed that players on the team who weren't Christians felt pressured to join in the prayers out of concern that the coach would retaliate against them and give them less playing time. The point of having the Establishment Clause is to protect freedom of and freedom from religion from government coercion.

The point of public schools is parents not having to worry about their kids being pressured into religious rituals that conflict with their own belief systems. But as usual, you have zero respect for the beliefs of people who are different from yourself.

a big difference is separation of church and state is in the constitution. A reqmt to stand for the flag isn’t.
