The main body, which is made of carbon fiber, would break/shatter into pieces.

"Also, be aware that it's difficult to detect signs of damage that indicate imminent failure. And unlike other materials that bend or buckle, when carbon fiber fails, it can fail spectacularly and shatter."

How Durable Is Carbon Fiber? How Durable Is Carbon Fiber?

That is my experience with carbon fiber in automotive applications.

There would be a large debris field from the carbon fiber when it shattered.

Same for bikes. Stories of people just riding along and the bike breaks in two ...

Fair enough, but I do think there’s a difference between doing it in a foxhole or among a group of similarly minded folks in private vs. out in public where anyone can see it.
For instance, had I said “hey, I know someone on the sub and this is hurtful” (I don’t, just making a point) everyone here would have apologized and felt badly about it. Why is it different for someone we don’t know? Imagine being a friend or family member desperately reading around the internet trying to find info and seeing people making jokes about their likely deaths? Especially when at the time those posts were made we all thought they may have been in the worst imaginable situation with oxygen running out and little hope of rescue, something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Not that the odds are high they would read this site in particular, just the basic idea for me I guess.
anyway, I won’t belabor it, just my POV.

As far as I can tell, it's currently the miles long antenna out the back of a E-6b Mercury TACAMO. I could be, and probably am, wrong.

Probably correct. But I know the thought was that you wanted something that was not vulnerable to first strike to ensure the boomers could retaliate

Kind of an odd measuring stick. Why not just use a state that is the size, say Vermont or something.

Or use something super practical, like the size of King Henry 1's foot.

Meh. People use humor through dark stuff... I am reminded of this very very very poor taste and very very very funny moment around a tragedy:

One thing I will say now that the fate is known, especially with the debris field, is I wonder if they're going to delay the release of this silly movie, currently scheduled for August. In the opening chapter at least, the “Meg” attacks a submersible in the Mariannas Trench and supposedly is offended by submersibles at depth

I always wonder if the woman, or whatever it was, newscaster ever recovered from that...
