We have a deep pass baller coming in next year… Lagway. I would think he would be used at times . Lookin forward to it.

The morning after the Kentucky game, I was wondering when the WWSOS DO? question would pop up.

By reading this thread, I see that it did not take long.

Also, I am not surprised with his comment. I am sure if there was a chalk board near by, or a patch of bare dirt, SOS would draw up a play on either one as he was talking.

I wonder which one of CBN's staff is responsible for taking down the valuable info from this forum. :D

Didn't Douglas got hurt after catching the long pass against UK?

Yes but it was a jump ball not in stride. He also hit Ricky earlier in the year that he had to slow his route and come back to.

Mertz struggles with accuracy on intermediate throws, on longer throws the receivers have been able to adjust.

IMO Napier fears turnovers, but at this point we have little to lose because fourteen points just aint going to win and forcing opponents to defend deep might open up our running game.

    Stop the damned button routes.

Yes but has anything from that game correlated with any of our other games? Mcneese state gave up 52 to Tarleton state the week before and are currently 0 and 5. Not sure anything can be taken from that game. You know I'm not a hater here but 3 touchdowns in our last 10 quarters....yikes

Our one outlier all season was to an 0 and 5 lower division school. Nothing close otherwise. Not even against charlotte

I'm merely responding to the question of whether or not Mertz can be accurate on the deep ball. I know you're not a hater and agree that the offensive output needs improvement.

Can you imagine another team putting 11 men in the box within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage versus Spurrier. Im going to bet he wouldn't be calling the dive play inside 2 of three downs and the wide receiver screen on 3rd and 8. Whoever did that to him all game would likely be watching the scoreboard change by the minute. Im just going out on a limb here but I think Spurrier would figure out how to counter that move pretty quick.

We had a bad day and maybe it wouldn't have changed the result but being up 7 to 3 instead of down 16 zip to start certainly could have changed things.

That pass wasnt perfect, the receiver had to check up. But it was also a safe throw because the defender couldnt reach it.

So, my take is: Let Mertz take more of those kinds of shots. Yes he cant take them if he doesnt have time, but time is a catch 22. When they dont fear getting beat by the long ball they wont give you time to throw any ball.

That deep pass to Ricky was on the money. Ricky just dropped it when he hit the ground.

Would the OL allow enough time for deep pass routes? If the RB is unable to pick up the blitzer, can these plays be successful? Is Billy calling these plays because it is where Mertz is most effective? Working with the talent he has?

His long pass to Ricky at UK was a perfect ball that Ricky unfortunately couldn’t hold onto. His pass to Douglas when Douglas got hurt was under thrown but still a great pass. I think Mertz is capable of throwing it down field

It’s hard to do anything with them all stacked up close but big plays should happen often and loosen it up. There’s no one back there for gods sake. One guy and they’re off to the races.

UF's 3rd down conversion rate is 26.53%, yet we want to play conservative and get to 3rd and manageable. Only 6 teams in FBS are worse, and if anyone has forgotten we were 8 of 9 vs TN in the first half. The first half of TN is a statistical anomaly and why it was our only "good" half vs FBS competition. As presently run our offense is like a pitcher who hangs curves all the time and the catcher is calling curve balls.
