Starbucks is closing 16 stores over safety concerns - CNN

Is Starbucks closing this stores because of a "high volume of challenging incidents" or are they closing them over attempts by employees to unionize? Interesting timing?

Intriguing for sure. I don’t know the stats on the unionization aspect, and until I hear differently I’m willing to go with the stated rationale, but I too am side-eyeing it.

For clarity, I am frequently here stating that McD’s doesn’t exist to give kids jobs. I am also firmly labor when push comes to shove.

But Starbucks is a little different than standard fast food. It’s standard fare dressed up to extract exorbitant revenue. I also support that concept: the correct price for non-essential crap is what people will pay, no matter what that price is (looking at you, Bose.)

Starbucks won’t miss me, but I would go out of my way to avoid them if this turns out to be union-busting.

They mentioned a bunch of woke ass violent big cities, and they're flaming libby themselves.

Hence my money is on the rubber hitting the road at fruits of dumbfund the police movement that the woke folk welcomed like taking in a warm cuddly grizzly bear into your cabin in the woods...

    Union busting?

I have SB downn closer to the $15/hour min wage side of the spectrum.

    Jmho/fwiw.

Union busting is a conspiracy theory. Laziness and incompetence are much more likely the cause of all those layoffs. Besides, someone would have talked by now. You can't expect everyone involved in such a thing to keep quiet forever.

The one in Amelia Island recently lost a huge lawsuit to a in proper placed crosswalk where a customer was injured.

They need to close because of an increasingly crappy and overpriced product.

I used to be a frequent customer, but the burned beans got old.

I'll still hit one on a road trip for convenience but locally Its always the local places for me.

Frankly I wouldn't miss them. (My teenagers love it but more for desert than coffee.)

Coffee is roasted, thats how it works. Do you grind up the green ones? Maybe you are doing this wrong. :)

SBUX locates stores about every 5-6 blocks in these major metros so closing 16 will do little to tamp down unionization efforts in those cities. There are too many other nearby options to avoid it.

I suspect it has more to do with a business customer drop in areas where office workers haven’t returned to the office 5x a week, possibly creating a safety issue, and/or also a drop in business revenue that can now be more easily absorbed by other nearby stores.

Yeah coffee is roasted, but @tilly is 100% right that SB is burnt. They "overroast" their beans so severely that it simply doesn't taste any good to me. My teenager loves them for the sugar drinks when she's with her mom, but I categorically refuse to go into one.

Yeah, I was just giving him crap. The only time I get Starbucks is at the airport or at some meeting when its been supplied, and my expectations are always very low.

They're also considering closing restrooms off to public access. Reads to me like it's a homeless problem in these particular locations.

Whenever I drink Starbucks, my body feels weird. I seriously start shaking. I get anxious, worry about everything and I get over dramatic…and make mountains out of mole hills. My wife always knows when I’ve drank that stuff. She says I act like a libbie.

    Ha. :D

Seriously, It is a known thing that Starbucks "over roasts" their beans to give them all the same flavor for consistency. Different beans taste different and Starbucks (understandably) wants the same flavor in every store.

They accomplish this with and over roasting process.

We all love consistency. Starbucks gives that. The over roasted coffee works well in blended drinks too.

And like you said in most airports that is your option on a long layover. I don't hate starbucks but compared to the local places, Starbucks is the McDonalds compared to Ruth's Chris. Sometimes McD's is convenient, but never the top choice

Starbucks is also higher concentration by design. They openly admit this. My wife gets the decaf Americano because their straight stuff givers her the jitters

I enjoy a frap.... On a rair occasion ...for a desert, but thats pretty much a whole days worth of calories and it takes a full gym day just to work it off. :/
