    • Al Overview

Yes, Bobby Bowden, the legendary Florida State Seminoles football coach, used the shotgun formation as a staple of his offense:

    • In 1992, Bowden's Seminoles used the shotgun to defeat Tech in the fourth quarter after struggling in the first three quarters.
    • Bowden's coaching staff began researching the shotgun formation in the winter of 1991, inspired by two successful NFL offenses. a
    • The shotgun formation, along with no-huddle formations, reverses, and trick plays, helped the Seminoles become a dominant force in the ACC.
Bowden was known for his offensive wizardry and ability to recruit top players. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and led the Seminoles for 34 seasons, winning two national titles.

Okay, finally an answer to my question as to who utilized it as much as Spurrier did later. Thank you. I remember Ware winning the Heisman with the Run and Shoot, but didn't remember it was from the Shotgun.

Originally, the run and shoot was set up so the quarterback would be under center with the running back lined up a few yards behind him. Later, during his tenure with the University of Hawaii, June Jones used quarterback Colt Brennan out of the shotgun.

He was of the opinion that going into the shotgun messed up the play action and the lead draw that he loved using. He was reluctant to modify those concepts until he had to.

    To Napier's actual credit...

He called a 30 yard pass play with 5 mins left in the game last night, that set up the dagger TD.

34-20 at the time, ball near midfield.

Billy ball called for conservative run out the clock runs...

"Scared money don't make money" called for a ballsy aggressive deep pass to seal the win.

That 'scared money...' Spuieresque killer instinct is what we'd been waiting for, for 2.5 seasons.

Nope, never implied in any way that Spurrier came up with the idea. Reading comprehension, you should look into it.

You're the one who wants metrics. Typical of someone who wants someone else to do the work. Plus, you'd disagree with them if you didn't like the results.

All the SEC passing records pretty much exist post 1990 once Spurrier changed the way the league played. We were known as a power run conference with the likes of Bo Jackson and Hershel Walker and Emmitt Smith prior to that.

Yep. Walsh was very meticulous with timing up receiver's routes with Qb's footwork(3-step, 3 quick, 3-step with hitch, 5-step, 5-step with hitch). Timing out of shotgun not quite as consistent.

I'm not the idiot challenging people to show him others who used it. Perhaps you should learn to understand the nuances of language. My statement was hyperbole

SOS was late in adopting the shotgun because he believed it was “high school.”

As far as the NFL goes, as already mentioned, the Dallas Cowboys popularized it, although they did not invent it.

“The shotgun became a "signature" formation for the Cowboys, especially during third down situations. The shotgun was adopted by more teams throughout the pass-happy late 1980s, and was part of almost every team's offense in the 1990s ...”

    Shotgun formation - Wikipedia

I’ve often wondered if the national championship game against Nebraska would’ve turned out differently if Florida had used the shotgun then, especially because so often there was no blocker with Danny in the backfield.

Yeah...he definitely had his reasons, it wasn't random stubbornness. I think losing Jeff Mitchell to injury was probably what forced the issue

Yeah inwas good either way but I was good with playing it safe heading into halftime only because we came out the 2nd half with the expectation of keeping our foot on the pedal which we did. DJ had just thrown an INT and we had just allowed a kick return TD. It didn't hurt to allow him to collect himself take the lead into half time with the waybour defense was playing and add to the lead the last half. We had already in the 1st half scored more points and gained more yards than KY allowed on avg for a whole game the entire year.
